By JOSEPH FLEMING United Presi International BERLIN IVPD East German sirls have Rone on a "love strike'' to keep their boy friends from drinking. Hans has been given tne cnoice of Gretel or the bottle. Female members of the Soviet zone Commjinist Youth Organi zation have vowed to become Ger man-style Carrie Nations to help the Kremlin s ami-alcohol cam paign. But while America's Carrie Nation only broke up saloons her tenmerance drive, the East German girls threaten to break ud romances. The eirls went into action be cause few East Europeans heeded Communist orders to sober up. East Europeans are trying to drown their discontent in large amounts of vodka, schnapps and beer, apparently because Com munism is driving them to drink. As a result, drunkenness has be come a major prooiem in tast Germany, the Soviet Union. Po land, Hungary and other Soviet bloc nations. Now the Reds are using sex as weapon to keep men on the wagon. The love strike was started by Gisela Huth of Schwenn, who complained that her boy friend 'once or twice a week consumed alcohol into the early hours." She told the Communist Youth newspaper "Young World" that all her powers of persuasion fail ed to keep her boy friend out ot bars. Finally, she told him, "If you do not stop drinking, I will leave you." Her decision was hailed by oth- girls who adopted the lame course. A girl at Wolnursleben said her boy friend too often celebrated other people's birthdays by drink ing. I gave him the ultimatum me or alcohol," she said in a letter to Young World. Among the letters was one from Ingrid Pausewang of Chemnitz, who reported lhat her boy friend is now teetotaler who finds drinking a waste of money. ' "It merely was necessary to convince him that there are mor interesting things in life thai drinking," she wrote. SUMMER SCHOOL ALL LIVELS DEDRICK PRIVATE SCHOOL 100S Pint Ph. The order was given them by city Fire Chief Roy Rowe, who re minded that already too many youngsters have been hurt in sim ilar experiments. The teen-agers Bob Lewis, Delmar Hawley and Gene Ochs, KUHS students drew the chief's notice Saturday when Iheir experi ments with "rocket fuel" caused a minor blaze in a South Sixth Street shop. The shop is owned by manufac turer Fred Lewis, Bob's dad, who has consented to let the boys use sketches and diagrams for a three- stage rocket, "Klamath Special," which they expect to launch some time next month. The boys were undeterred by Rowe's warning, since they arc working outside the city. They said they had planned and studied (electronics, engineering and chem istry) too long to stop their rocket building project now. - Although they don't expect the "Klamath Special" to go put into space, they predict it may. go a mile high. o o o Rudy's 6th & Main o o o o 1 LB.(M PAIR Of Freeman's New POUND-A-PAIR SHOES . . and it oil odds up to the most comfortable, lightest shoes vou ever hod on your feet.
