Carrier Set
For Junk Pile
WASHINGTON (AP) - Navy
Secretary Thomas S. Gates has
signed the final papers that will
send to the junk heap the carrier
Enterprise, battlescared veteran
of World War II. ,
The Navy action Tuesday, which
will put the "Big E" up for auc
tion as scrap, followed the fail
ure of private Individuals and Pa
cific war veterans, headed by
Fleet Adm. William F. Halsey, to
raise enough money to preserve
the Fighting Lady as a perma
nent memorial.
The Navy was Informed late
last month that the Enterprise
fund drive had been halted after
collection of about $100,000, far
short of the million dr.ilars re
quired. The fund raisers told the
Navy they wanled the $100,000 do
nated to the Navy-Marine memo
rial stadium which will be built
at Annapolis, Md.
The Enterprise was placed in
the reserve fleet some years ago.
But with the modernization of
later and larger carriers and the
building of much bigger ones, it
was removed from the active list
and several years ago the Navy
suggested that money might be
saved on her upkeep in the moth
ball fleet by disposing of the ship
for scrap.

SOUP RECESS
Soup-on-the-recks with Italian
style breadsticks offer a chance
or guests to quell their hunger
and impatience according to their
individual desires and a chance for
he chef to calm his charcoal-jangled
nerves.
Serve bouillon over ice, with
each guest helping himself from
an ice bucket and glass set. Gar
nished with a spray of fresh mint
or pickle slice, it's a perfect ap
petizer and prelude to the hearty
fare whose promise is wafted along
in tantalizing fashion from the
grill.

glasses, a handy caddy carrier set.

orate the frosted glassware.
Let each guest serve himself as
the spirit of hunger moves him
There will be no more "how much
longer?" looks and the chef's
nerves will be steadied for his
final stint at the grill.
Glassware shapes have been de
veloped through the centuries for
three distinct purposes. First,
there is beauty. Next is the ques
tion of quantity. Most items of
home glassware are designed to
liold the right amount of drink for
one serving, whether it is the
breakfast fruit juice, milk goblet
or after dinner liqueur. Finally
comes the matter of assuring that
a drink maintains its proper tern
perature and is not too much
warmed by the hand. That's why
glasses for wine and cocktails are
made with stems, according to
Libbey Glass.
