RALPH DALZEIX Storage space in many of the smaller homes and apartments for small items is inadequate especial ly in bedrooms. To provide handy, useful additional storage space, off - the - floor drawers can be in stalled tinder beds. When the beds are made up, the spreads hide the drawers. Hide-a-way steel drawers can be purchased completely assembled to screw to the bottom edges of bed rails. Hide-a-way drawers are off the floor, clean and practically dust free, and can be made with a small quantity of wood, a few screws and simple hand tools. Picture X shows part of a wood frame bed. Note the corner posts, the headboard, the side rails and the slats. One or more drawers can be attached to the bottom edges of the rails, as indicated, and can be from 24 to 30 inches wide, six or eight inches deep and three to four or more feet wide. The same construction procedure can be used for two drawers. Two slides arc required for each drawer. The slides are shown in pictures X and Y and detailed in picture Z. Lumber yards will cut the L-shaped slides. The dimen sions shown in picture Z ore rec ommended. Each slide must be long enough to reach both rails of Uic bed. Two runners (pictures Wand y are required for each drawer. Piece 2 of the runner, see picture Z, should be one-half inch thick and two inches high. It should be screwed to piece 4 using flat head screws. Be sure to drill pilot holes for the screws. Piece 4 can be cne inch thick and as high as the deptlLof the drawer. For a lighter weight drawer, make piece 4 of three-fourths inch stock. Use one-half inch stock or three eighls inch plywood for the bottom of drawer. Fasten with screws. Make the back of the drawer 16 in picture X) of one-inch or three four Ihs stock. Fasten it to the run ners with wood screws. The front of the drawer, see pic ture W, can lie made of one-half Inch stock and shaped (sec 6 and 7) so that it also covers the ends of the slides, runners and bottom piece. Tlie front edges tsoe 8) can be beveled or rounded for better uppearance. Bevel with a plane, Uien round with sandpaper. Use a carpenter s square when asscmbl big the parts so that all corners re exactly 90 degrees. Screw the slides to bottom edges of rails with flat head wood screws. Drill pilot notes for the screws so the rails will not split. Be sure the screws enter the mid dle of the rails. Paint front of the drawer to match the rails of the bed. For steel beds, drill holes in the rails and attach the runners with nuts and bolts. Noel Bennion, OSC poultry spe cialist and OPHA secretary, says this year's program is designed es pecially for market egg producers but should also be of interest to hatcherymen, feed dealers, pro cessors and field service men.
