One night about 20 years ago, my husband and I attended a Boy Scout dinner in another town. On our way home in a heavy rainstorm, the car stalled. We saw house lights in the distance and tramped down the road to call a garage. But it was nearly midnight, and all the garages were closed. The man whose phone we used then donned a raincoat and tried to help us start our car. When this failed, he took us back to the house and handed us the keys to his own car. We were astonished at his remarkable offer but, under the circum stances, we had to accept. When my husband returned the car the next day, he asked the man how he could trust a stranger so completely. This kind gentleman replied, "I wasn't worried. The Last Flrtt Aid. I'm in the Army medical service where, because of the shortage' of trained personnel, the experienced men must conduct classes. My first class was on the treatment of sick and wounded, and I thought I was holding the interest of the group until I noticed a Southern boy dozing at the rear. I figured the best way to arouse him was to ask him a question. So I said, "Pvt. Jones! If you found a man wounded in the head, chest, and back, what would you do first?" He snapped his eyes open, then relaxed and drawled, "Well, Sarg, I'd tell him to repeat after me, 'Our Father, Who art in heaven . . .' " SP2 Raymond F. Harris, Fort Rucker, Ala. Where Hli Heart Is. I was going to spend the whole day in a nearby town so, before leav ing, I pinned a note inside the front door for my teen-age daughter. I returned earlier than expected and was upstairs when my daughter came in with a bevy of teen-agers. I heard one boy exclaim, "Is this where your mother leaves notes?" She said, "Sure. While driving through California's orange groves recently, my grandparents stopped beside the road for a better view and got into conversation with the owner of a nearby orchard. He asked them the usual questions about Idaho and, in turn, they asked him about California, mentioning that it was the first time they had ever seen an orange grove. He invited them in and told them to pick some oranges.
