OREGON SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 1958 OPEN SEASON 7 tli mm A Diplomas Awarded Largest Merrill Graduating Class MERRILL The largest graduat ing class in the history of Merrill High School held commencement exercises at the school on Tues day evening, 27. Twenty-six students were awarded their diplo mas by Troy Quails, chairman of the local school board. Guest speaker was Floyd Wynne, city editor of the Herald and News. His topic "Our Challenge" ex pressed the need of explaining America to the world. With the rising world situations and prob lems, Wynne emphasized that it is largely our young people of to day who must handle the path way to the future by showing the entire world the advantages of freedom and individuality over state control and godlessness. Addresses were also presented by Ron Chance, class valedictori an, and Stephen Hobson, saluta torian. Special mention was made of the fact that Leroy thus, trans feree this year from Madras, tied with Ron Chance in grade point average. A $100 scholarship presented an nually by the Merrill Business and Professional Women's Club was awarded to Lucy Root, Miss Root plans to attend Portland State Col lege to become an elementary teacher. The presentation was made by Mrs. Frances Koertje. Ron Chance was recipient of the $100 scholarship awarded by the Merrill Vf w Auxiliary. Mrs. Mar garet Moore was the auxiliary spokesman. Chance also was awarded a full tuition and fee scholarship to Southern Oregon College. He intends to major in elementary education. It was also announced that Ste phen Hobson was notified that he is an alternate for a full tuition and fee scholarship to Oregon State College. Other awards presented during the evening were: boys athletic award, Perry Laney; girls athletic award, Arlene Johnson: senior citizen, Tom Bcasly; Daughters of American Revolution award, Ar lene Johnson. VFW Women Pick Leaders An election of officers was held Wednesday, May 28, by Salon 355 Euhl and Forty. The meeling was opened in ritual order with May Utidd, presidenl. presiding. The date was set for the annual picnic to be held Sunday, Julv 20. in the Veterans Memorial Park with Lina Molschcnhachrr, Edna Russell and Irene l'otcct on the committee.
