Neither could Romanoff prove he was born in the U.S. in 1893. "To most people citizenship Is academic, Romanoff said. "But to one who is stateless it becomes a very, very important thing. This week climaxes a long expensive effort for me to become a U.S. citizen. "Since 1922 I've spent $.18,001) trying to prove that I was born in New York," ho said. "I've spent seven years of mf life in prisons and have been accused of almost every crime in the world It has made me very humble and I'm not a humble man. I'm an arrogant man." He first sought citizenship in 1922 after arriving here from Eu rope. Turned down, he was or dered deported but escaped from custody and was apprehended in 1924. He disappeared from sight in 1925 and seven years later again applied for citizenship after arriving on the lie de France as a stowaway. Deported to France in May, 19:12, he returned to U.S. the same year, again belinevcd to have slowed away. Ho claimed ho had left the country unintentionally hen ho went to sco some friends embark and remained aboard the ship. Deportation proceedings were begun once again but sub sequently were dropped. Congress cleared the way for him to become a citizen this month when it passed and sent to President hisenhower a bill which declared Romanoff, also known as Harry Gerguson, shall he considered to have been "law fully admitted" to the United Slates as of December, 1932. The President obliged and Mike (and or Harry Gerguson or Fer guson) immediately filed for na turalization papers expected to be granted within a month. Mathews began his banking ca reer in 1919 with the Hank of I.assen County and was trans I erred to Alturas in August, Hi;t4. to manage the Alturas branch of the Bank of America. Kenneth Clark, manager of the Alluras branch, was master of ceremonies at the banquet. N.Y. (AP) Members ol the U.N. Security Council were polled today on the date they'd prefer to take up charges by Tunisia and France against each other. The meeting may be tomorrow or Monday. Tunisian Delegate Mongi Slim Bus Deliberation Wins Man $5,000 CHICAGO (UPI) - A jury awarded Allen Schmidt $5,000 Thursday for injuries suffered on a Chicago Transit Authority bus six years ago. Schmidt, 31, said the seat of his trousers caught fire while he was dozing on the bus and he was forced to keep his pants on because the bus was too crowded. A fellow passenger finally snatched the pants from him, Schmidt said, but not before he suffered second degree burns. Schmidt blamed a mechanical defeat in the bus for the blaze. CPEN 6!30 P. M. filed a complaint last night charg. ing French forces in Tunisia and Algeria with armed aggression against the Tunisians. French Delegate Guillaume Georges-Picot countered with a charge that Tunisia had breached an understanding with France concerning the stationing of the French troops in Tunisia. He asked that the Council meeting requested by Slim take this up and also resume consideration of an earlier French complaint that Tunisia is aiding the Moslem rebels in Algeria. A report from Tunis said French and Tunisian troops fought a five hour desert battle in southern Tunisia yesterday, but no casual ties were reported.
