PAGE 2 B HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON WEDNESDAY, MAY 21. 1953 Tighe Cleared By Brass DETROIT ( Manager Jack Tighe had a vote of confidence from the front office today while his Detroit Tigers were wallowing in a six-same losing streak. Club President Harvey K. llan en declared 'Tishe is not going to be crucified by the fans and (he Detroit Tiger management is not going to be influenced and pressured by fans and newspa pers." He said the talkative sophomore pilot has done "a good job under the circumstances." The letter-writers hav been hush of late, demanding that Tighe be ousted. Newspapers and radio stations have had large numbers of letters and calls from disgruntled fans and one group has adopted the slogan "get rid of Tighe by the Fourth of July." "The second-guessers have been pretty busy." said Hansen, -"reflecting on the losing streak that matches the club's poorest string of performances during all of the 1957 season. "I don't know of another man ager in the major leagues whe has had more to contend with thb year than Jack. He's had injuries galore and a lot of bad luck. Sure. people gripe when you lose. That's only natural. "But a lot of good managers have been ruined by this silly no tion that you must fire the man ager when the club is going poor ly. Too many managements I mean the top brass have al lowed themselves to be pressured Into drastic moves rather than to rely on their own judgment. Hansen said directors of the tlub have never discussed the possibility of removing Tighe. whose Tigers have lost more games than any other American League club. Hansen was interviewed during Detroit's sixth straight loss yes terday and during the talk he looked up just in time to see Bal timore's Bob Nieman hit his sec ond straight home run over the left field barrier. "There," he said, "you can't blame Jack for that. He can t hit nd pitch for his players.". By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AMERICAN LEAGUE W L Pet. Entrants in the state competition are qualified on an individual basis as the first and second place fin ishers in 13 of the 14 district events are granted berths. In the 880 re lay the first two four man teams will go on to the state test. The dinner of the 'state title will be the school which has amassed the most total points. In 1957 the Pelicans placed four men in the state meet off their performances in the district clash. This year coach Len Surtes has six men whom he feels have an excel lent chance to make the trip. The Pel squad, which has seen numerous changes in the roster since early season, has improved considerably and is expected to turn in a better than average ef fort at Grants Pass. Making the trip for KU are Rob Drace, Jim Sevde. Don Lynn. Don Story. Claeton Griggs, Jim Parks. Bill Santo. Don Isensee. Dale El lis, Bill Sproat, Ken tollman, Rich Humphrey, Tom Ankeny, Don Bun ker, Allen Phillips, Don Leach, Bob Lewis. Ron Olvera and Gordie Scllars. One more man is to be picked Thursday afternoon from trials in the 100 yard dash. Relative newcomers to the var sity lineup include freshman ADen Phillips. BUI Sproat and Dale El lis. Phillips will compete in both the javelin and high jump, while Sproat will head the KU milers and Ellis will enter the 880 and the pole vault. he quit pitching. "I had to." he grinned. "John ny Murphy's arm gave out." Gomez, also known as "Goofv." wasn't being zany when he made that reply. For Murphy was a great relief pitcher whose ability to come out of the bullpen and save games for tiring starters played a major part in forging the Yankee legend. The relief pitcher, on the whole is the unsung hero of baseball. But give a team a good one and the pennant prospects are bright ened perceptibly. Standouts - include such as Jim Kon5tanty, who appeared in a record 74 games for the 1950 flag winning Phillies, and Hugh Casey and Clem Labine, whose late inning talents allowed each to wrap up a pair of pennants for the Dodgers. Which brings us to Rinold 'Rinei Duren, the 29-year-old flame thrower from Cazenovia, Wis., who already has saved six games for the YaDkees this sea son as of Tuesday. Duren is a six foot, two inch 200-pounder who throws the ball with blazing speed. Compounding his effectiveness, he is n e a r sighted. This means that, when he squints through glasses which look like two lenses from the Mt. Palomar telescope, the batters take a very wary toehold. Being extremely wild kept him out of the majors for years. It is no fable that he hit two men waiting in the on - deck circle while he was in the Texas I eague. His teammates call him BEOOl 3 THE OLD SUNNY BROOK. CO., LOUISVILLE, KY., DISTRIBUTED BY NATIONAL DISTILLERS PRODUCTS CO,. Now they are reunited again, the Yankees getting Rine in the Billy Martin deal with Kansas City last June and then farming him out to Denver for a refresher course until this spring. Now his speed has brought him up again, with references to new control. Rine has saved six games for the Yankees, Bobby Shantz being his chief beneficiary with three wins on Duren's relief talents. He also has rushed to the winning aid of Tom Sturdivant, Whitey Ford and Sal Maglie. In the case of Maglie, as example, can you imagine the hitters' consternation when, just as they are beginning to time old Sal's caterpillar slants, Rine comes in and starts firing bullets?
