I A (ale of undercover police work un folded yesterday in the trial of 35 men charged with conspiracy to ship arms and ammunition to Cu ban rebels. One government witness, a (firm er police oflicer. testified he de livered hy truck a mysterious shipment to a group of men ;it a nearby beach on the Gulf of Mex ico. Another said he posed as a crew member on a converted fishing vessel on which the group was ap- Srehended after a sea chase last larch. Testimony got under way before a jury of II men and a woman after all 35 pleaded innocent. An tonio del Conde, Mexico City, whom the government claims con spired to move arms to Cuban rebel leader Fidel Castro, pleaded guilty and will be sentenced later. The defendants sat in a row as the trial got under way before Judge .lames V. Allred. An in terpreter translated for the de fendants, most of whom have dif ficulty with Knglish. Court recessed for the night aft er Immigration Patrol Inspector George W. Nefforcl said he posed as a member of the .crew of the vessel on which the men were ar rested, the Orion. Former police officer Alfonso A. Teveino. 37, said he met Del Conde last February, and con sented to have a "shipment" con signed in his name and sent to Brownsville. Trcvino testified he was in con stant contact with U.S. customs agents throughout that time. The government claims Del Conde was contact man for the defendants. Government agents seized some 120.0110 worth of small arms and ammunition on the fishing vessel. Conviction could mean up to 10 years in prison or $10. (KM) fines or both for each defendant. Hayes, chief of the California Department of Agriculture's Farm Placement Service. Hayes told the Board of Agri culture Monday that farm em ployment reached 457,000 during the week ending May 10, an crease of 73,700 from the April level. Hayes said there were unfilled jobs for fi.(KM) more workers. He said the shortage was mostly con centrated in the Central Coast and San .Joaquin Valley counties. However, despite the sharp in crease in farm employment, 21,000 fewer persons were working on (arms May 10 than were em ployed the corresponding week last year. May 23, at 7:30 in Pelican Court. Approxi mately 250 students from the se lect choruses in the grade schools will sing, closing the program with "Seventy Six Trombones" accom panied by the All - Schools Ele mentary Band. In addition, the elementary string orchestra and the intermediate string orchestra under the direction of Kristian Gippo will play. The elementary hand and intermediate band di rected by Russell Whalen will close the progiam. A special fea ture of the instrumental part of the program will he numbers by the All-City Elementary Band which won a superior rating in the recent contest. President Ernesto de la Guardia Jr. blamed the clash yesterday between the students and National Guardsmen on political opponents who he said used the youths as a shock force against his govern ment. He agreed to meet tomor row with student leaders to dis cuss their demand for removal of three guard commanders. Sixty-two persons were injured in the clash at Panama City's largest high school 42 students, 18 guardsmen and two bystand ers. Four students and five guards men were hospitalized.
