Jn nailing wood, how can splitting be avoided or reduced?' A. With the advice of your hard wore or lumber dealer, choose the nail with the smallest diameter that will do the job, the Western Pine Association says. If splitting is encountered, blunt the point of the nail. Where conditions warrant, pre-bore holes slightly smaller than the nail diameter. Q. How deep should a wooden fence post be set? A. A good rule of thumb is to sink one-third of the length of z wooden fence post into the ground be sure to treat it well with a preservative first, however. Excel lent preservatives are the penta chlorophenol formulas developed in the laboratories of the Western Pine Association and available na tion-wide under a variety of brand names. Q. How should random - width paneling be gsed? A. paneling comes in various widths. The widely used paneling from the western pine region, for instance, is available in widths of six, eight, ten, and twelve inches, and sometimes narrower or wider boards. These panels are used in a repeated pattern such as six, eight, ten, six, eight, ten; in "step-up-step-down" fashion such as six, eight,, ten, eight, six; or eatch-as- catch-ean as the boards are picked up. Q. What's the best way to sand wood paneling? A. First, use a coarse sandpaper. where necessary, to iron out "dressing skips" which occasion ally occur in paneling, says the Western Pine Association. Then rub carefully with a very fine sand paper No. 4-0. for instance. Al ways sand with the grain when hand sanding or when using a belt sander. A vibrator-type sander can be used freely. Q. Can pine paneling be used i a bathroom? A. Yes, indeed. In fact, the pop ularity of paneling from the west ern pine region in bathrooms is on the increase because of the warm look it gives. However, in any place where humid air pre vails, the wood should be treated with a good commercial water re pellent before installation. Prop erly treated, wood paneling will stand up well for years in a bath room. Stilbestrol May Improve Weight Gams An agriculture department re search team reports that stilbes trol may help improve summer time weight gains by yearling steers on native ranges. this announcement follows a study by the agriculture depart-1 ment and the North Dakota Ag ricultural Experiment Station. Milbestrol, a hormone-like sub stance, is now used to step up gains in three quarters of the beef cattle in feed lots across the country. 1 In the range experiments, year ling Hereford steers were given Lstilbestrol pellets planted under the skin ot their ears. The steers which received Uie chemical gained 48 pounds more per head than un treated steers in 140 days on pas ture ... an advantage of near ly 21 per cent. The crop reporting board tells us that red meat production last year reached a total ol 26,;HH),ooo, 000 pounds, down four per cent from the record high production of 1956, but big enough to be the second biggest meat year in history. - Beef production in 1957 was off two per cent from 1U56, veal was down six per cent, mutton and lamb down five per cent, and pork down seven per cent. , These figures are background tor this year s meat story . . , the continuing downturn in mar keting early this year which pushed livestock prices to relative ly high levels. ANCA Leader Seeks Support For Beef Bill ONTARIO Oregon cattlemen are urged to actively support pend ing national legislation to allow market deductions on cattle for support of major beef promotional efforts. G. H. (Jack) Milburn, president of the American National Cattle men's Association, told members of the Oregon Cattlemen's Associa tion in convention here that beef promotion and research 'can benefit consumers as well as cat tlemen." Milburn, a noted rancher from Grassrange, Montana, explained that adequate promotional work could help consumers take advan tage of fluctuating beef supplies, develop more menu variety, and "become acquainted with the many thrifty cuts we raise along with the steaks and roasts they like so well. "If Mrs. Homemoker is kept in formed, she can help us build a more stable industry," Milburn de clared. He told the Oregon beef makers that the national legislation was needed to remove restrictions writ ten into the Packers and Stock Yards Act "years ago before any one realized that research and promotion were so necessary in the increasingly competitive food field. "We are entitled to spend our own cow money for the advance ment of our industry in service to the consumer, Milburn said. He saluted the Oregon Cattle men's Association and the many Oregon county organizations for providing effective "voices" foi individual cowmen. "Through mily of effort we can be equal to .'ising production costs, problem: of weather and economics and th lemands of the future," Milbun Jeclared. The National Grange says Con gress could give agriculture a big boost by approving a bill aimed at helping industry in depressed ireas. The bill is before the House Banking and Currency Committee, If it s passed, the grange says il would provide new otl-theTfarm jobs in depressed rural areas, and the grange- behoves it would re move the political pressure creat ed by low-income farm families making it easier to pass construe live long-range farm laws. rhe grange says the redevelop ment bill lor depressed areas could in fact, turn out to be the most important farm bill of 1958 ATTRACTIVE mirrored walls such as the one illustrated in the room above, are finding their way into American, homes. Crop and livestock totals arc given in separate sections. Seven ty maps are included in the 42 pnge book. Copies of the atlas will be sold through the Oregon Stale College Bookstore for $1 each. Ideas Offered For Fencing Job Good weather is a lime for; fence-mending and fence-building. Place '.he fence far enough I back from the driveway to permit j opening of ear doors. j Use 4x4 inch fence posts spaced no more than eight feet apart. Use 2x4 inch stringers or rails i and 1x2 inch shoulders where the stringers meet the post face. I-or stability, place at least one- third the post length below the ground line. 'ut a two-inch layer of gravel in the bottom of the post hole for drainage. n areas where ground is soft or yielding, place posts in a sub surface concrete base.
