Although still bottled up in the House Rules Committee, where it is strongly opposed by Chairman Howard W. Smith ID-Val, the Alaska bill has been placed on the week's program by the House leadership. Statehood bills have a privileged slatus under which thev mav be brought to the lloor for considera tion through a motion by the chairman of the House Insular Af fairs Committee in this case, Hep. MADRAS. Ore. I There was this happy footnote to the wreck age of a plane that lay twisted and burned Monday atop a butte in Central Oregon: Its two crewmen escaped with out injury. The giant Boeing 307 cargo plane crashed on the butte in rugged country. 15 miles west of here Saturday night, after a mid-air explosion sent flames rippling through the craft. After its crash landing, pilot Leo Wassenbcrg and co-pilot Al Brooks scrambled to safety. The craft had taken off 4'i hours earlier on a fuel consump tion test from Troutdale, and was returning to the field near Port land when the explosion occurrcdt Wassenbera said he was flying at about 1,000 feet when trouble struck. The craft then was Hying over mile-wide canyon. Fliers here speculated that if the plane had been another 100 feel lower, it might have dropped into the canyon instead of reaching the grassy, rock-strewn butte. "We were on our way back to Troutdale when I heard an explo sion, a kind o! a loud Doom, i looked back in the plane and the floor was on lire," Wassenbcrg said. The Hawlhurnc, Calif., pilot said that "All I thought about was a place to land. I p it the landing gear down and headed for an open place on the butte." Bolh tires were shredded by the rocks and blew out. "It started to nose over." the 50-year-old pilot said. "The tail came up but then it went back down and wo didn't turn over." Wassennerg and Brooks. 35. of Montreal, Canada, dashed out of the plane. Two minutes later flames enveloped the entire fuse lage. Delvin Buc, a private nilot spotted the mushroom of smoke that boiled up into the sky. -He and Ken Heppi.er flew to the butte top and brought the two crewmen here in a private plane. Wassenbcrg said he had been scheduled to fly the plane later to the Philippines. It was owned, he said, by Leo Aimonelto of New Castle, Wyo. Hurt In Mishap Antonio Ortis, 43-ycar-old Chil oquin man, suffered minor head and shoulder injuries Sunday aft ernoon when ihe vehicle he was driving left Highway 97 and over turned three times near the Chil oquin Junction. Investigating stale police said ihe man had evidently passed anoth er vehicle and failed to regain con trol of his car when moving it back into th. ..roper lane. Ortis is reported in good con dition at the Klamath Valley Hospital.
