Lfi rookie patrolman shot a 16-yeai girl to death at a crowded bit station yesterday as she aimed t pistol at him. Sandra Lingscheit, only child ol JOLENE BONASCO, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bon atco, Plush,' has been named business manager of the Oregana, student yearbook, by the publications board at the University of Oregon. Jolene is a sophomore, ma joring in. history, and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Ape Boards Cargo Ship NORFOLK. Va. Ul - The U.S. Navy and Nicky, a friendly Bar bary ape, have each other up a tree. Nicky, destined for a Memphis zoo, escaped from his cage- yes terday and fled up the rigging of the cargo ship Antares. He was kept awake during the night hours by the glare of spot lights thrown on the 50-foot mast How to get him down? The Navy wished it knew. "I think he'll come down, all right," said Cmdr. J. F. Miller, skipper of the Anlares. which is tied up at a Norfolk Naval Base pier. "Maybe we can lure him down with bananas he seems to like them. We'll just improvise as we go. When it became obvious that Nicky wasn't going to be persuad ed to come down, .Miller set "monkey watch." The "monkey watch" hoisted a small heater into the rigging to keep Nicky warm. It focused the spotlight on him to be sure he wouldn't crawl out a cargo boom unnoticed. Once a sailor succeeded in get ting the three-foot-tall, 5-year-old Nicky to descend and accept a banana. But before a net could be lowered over him, Nicky sped back-up the , masb-with the ba nana. Nicky is a gift from the British admiral commanding at Gibraltar to the Memphis zoo. He was being transferred from ':,. seagoing cage to the smaller cage in which he will be shipped to Memphis when he got away. Civil Service Openings Told The United States Civil Service Commission has announced an ex amination for inspector, railway signals and train control, announce ment No. 149 B, for duty with the Interstate Commerce Commission, located in various cities through out the United Slates.. The en trance salary is $7,570 a year. To qualify, applicants must pass a written test ana, in aaaiuon, have had appropriate experience or a combination of experience and education. Full information and application forms may be obtained from Mr. Shaw located at Klamath Falls Post Office, Window No. 1 or from (he U.S. Civil Service Commission, Washington 25, D.C. Applications must be filed with the Board of U.S. Civil Service Examiners, In terstate Commerce Commission, Washington 25, D.C, and must be received, or postmarked, not later than April 3, 1958. Article Features Collier Park Collier State Park Logging Mu scum, illustrated -with numerous pictures, is featured in the De cember 1957 issue of "Steam En gines," a magazine dedicated to men who work with steam. Ray Campbell is the publisher. The park, located on Highway 97, 35 miles north of Klamath Falls, was visited by Mr. and Mrs Campbell last summer when pic tures of the museum logging equipment were taken. The ac companying text deals with the steam engines used in the logging industry over many years of progress. First use of steam in the logging woods was 1884. Steam power saws date back to the early 1900s. Columbia Basin irrigation proi- ct farm couple from Eltopia, '.'ash,., was killed by two .33 aliber slugs which tore into her eft chest. She had ignored three demands .0 throw down her gun. The girl and a companion, Janice Teel, also 16. of Pasco, Wash., had been stopped as run aways as they alighted from a bus. Patrolman Richard Stevens. 33, told Police Chief Earl Phillips he had no recourse but to shoot the girl, whose gun posed a threat to the some 50 persons crowded into the small bus depot in this south central Washington citv. Phillips, Deputy Sheriff Harold Guthrie and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Callahan, operators of the bus depot, ' all commended Stevens, who joined the police force only 10 months ago. Phillips said Stevens was "car rying out my orders and acting in defense of ms own lite. -Stevens said he had tried to get close to the girl, but failing that had "acted as any police officer would." Stevens had been sent to Ihe bus depot to. intercept Sandra and Janice at the request of Frank lin County officials. He said he accosted them short ly after they got off the bus to stretch their legs. Suddenly, Stev ens said, the Lingscheit girl turned her back. When she turned around, he said, she was gripping a .22-cal- iber automatic pistol in one hand and fumbling with the safety catch with her other hand. Three times Stevens ordered her to drop the weapon. hen his last order went unheeded he drew his own gun and shot her. Janice, untouched, told Prosecu tor Kay Munson she and Sandra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Lingscheit, were on their way to Portland. Janice, daughter of Air. and Mrs. Stanley Teel of Reno. Nev., has been living with an aunt, Mrs. Ruth Sanduski, . at Pasco, Wash. The Teel girl said that many times she and Sandra had prac ticed with the gun, which she said had belonged to an uncle of San dra's who was now dead. They took the gun with them, she said, "to protect us." Munson said an inquest would be held in the near future. Phillips ordered a complete investigation. Empty Bus Takes Plunge REEDSPORT. Ore. Wt-A school bus, which only a short time be fore had been loaded with some 50 grade school pupils, plunged over a high bank into a field near here yesterday. The bus driver. Harold An drews. 55 the only occupant was dead inside. He apparently suffered a fatal heart seizure, said Deputy Coroner Jack Ungar. First reports, relayed here by radio, that the bus had plunged into nearby Smith River sent a wave of panic through this South ern Oregon coastal town. It was thought that the children mignt still have been aboard. The children had been let off earlier, however, and Andrews was en route to pick up another load when he was stricken.
