Western Shows Ride High In TV Award Competition A KLAMATH FALLS MAN, 1st Lt. Frank R. (Dick) Griffiths. 'second from right, eon ducted his Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia, on t tour of KANU-TV, located at Kagnew Station, a U.S. Army post at Asamara, Eritrea, Africa. The emperor was accompanied by members of his official staff. The lieutenant, with the Army Signal Corps, has been stationed in Eritrea since November 1956. Local Soldier In Ethiopia The U.S. Army Post television station, KANU-TV at Asamara, Erl trea, Africa, is a mecca for visit' ing dignitaries, among them U.S Ambassador Uichards, who pre. sented the Eisenhower doctrine to countries of the Middle East last year. The post is currently pre paring for a visit from General Wlllitson B. Palmer, chief of the U.S. Army in Europe. First Lt. Frank R. Griffiths, with the U.S. Army Signal Corps, sta tioned in Eritrea, is usually the official guide on these tours. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Griffiths, 3950 Shasta Way, Klam ath Falls. He plans to return' here for a visit when his current en listment is up in October of this year. The officer plans to leave Eng land to attend the World's Fair in Brussels' before returning to the United States. He is a graduate of Klamath Union High School and of Oregon State College. KANU-TV is the first television station in Ethiopia, established in 1955, joining KANU radio outlet, built in 1948. Since TV's origin, some of the finest American tele vision programs for the entertain ment of American personnel in As amara have been given. KANU-TV is not only the first television sta tion in Ethiopia, but it is also the first ever operated by the U.S, Army. Science Fair Entries Mount Entries for the second annual Siskiyou County science fair are pouring into the office of the super intendent of county schools. Many more are expected before the clos ing deadline, March 21. The fair, financed by the, Siski you County Medical Association, will be open to the public from 7 p.m., March 27, until 3 p.m., March 29. The senior division en tries will be on display In the old gymnasium at the Yreka High School, and the seventh to ninth grade entries will be displayed at the Gold Street Elementary School. Entries are anticipated from schools throughout the county. HOLLYWOOD iUP- Westerns were "ridin' high" today in com petition for television's golden Emmy awards to be presented April 15 for outstanding work in 1957. "Gunsmoke," "Maverick," and "Wagon Train" were among the 35 television programs and 117 performers announced Wednesday night as the Academy of Arts and Science' nominees for the indus try's most coveted award. The throe "oat burners" were nominuted for the best dramatic series with continuing characters along with "Lassie," and "Perry Mason. ,llm Arncss, sober-(need Mutt Dillon of "Gunsmoke," also wus nominated for the best continuing performance by an actor in a leading role in a dramatic or comedy series. So was Danny Thomas, Bob Cummings, Phil Sil vers, and Robert Young. But even the westerns were meeting tough competition in Co lumbia Broadcasting System's dramatic playhouse 90 which had 12 nominations in 28 categories. The Playhouse- produced pro grams lh Comedian. and "Helen Morgan Story" were nom inated as the best single programs of the year in a field which in cluded the Edsel show. General Motors 50th anniversary show, and Hallmark Hall of Fame's "Green Pastures." Nominated in the category of the "best musical, variety, audi ence participation or quiz series" were the shows of Dinah Shore, Ed Sullivan, Perry Como, Steve Allen and Jack Paur. Lee J. Cobb was nominated for the "bct single performance by an actor" for his portrayal of a pathologist on Studio One's "No Deadly Medicine." Also named were Mickey Roo ney who played "Sammy Ho garth" in Playhouse uo's "Comed ian;" Peter Ustinov, David Wayne and Ed Wynn. . The field for the "best continu ing performance by an actress in a leading role in a dramatic or comedy series" were Eve Ardcn, Spring Byington, Jan Clayton, Ida Lupmo and Jane Wyatt. Edward H. Murrow's "Person to Person, and "See It Now' were nominated in the "best pub lie service or series" category. CBS had 67 nominations while arch rival National Broadcasting company scored with 05. School Board Details Listed The law provides that persons wishing to become candidates for school board posts meet the fol lowing qualifications: 1. Be a registered voter in a precinct within the school district they seek to represent, the regis tration having been certified at least 30 days before the election date. 2. Be a continuous resident of the district in which they seek of I ice for not less than six months Further details can be obtained by contacting Harold Ashley, school clerk, at the KUHS build ing. With reference to the local school boards, one live-year seat will come up for election on each of the boards this year. Expiring terms are now being held by Jack unman on the high school board, and by Lctha Murphy on the ele mentary board. Neither of the in cumbents has indicated whether reelection will be sought. For the elementary post the pe tition of candidacy must be in the hands of the school clerk not later than April 4, and for the high school post the candidate declara tion must be in the clerk s hands not later than April 24. The school board and the budget elections will be May 5. The two upcoming terms are for five-year periods to begin July 1, 1958. AAL'W The regular meeting of AAUW which would be scheduled for Saturday, March 15, will not be held this Saturday. The meet ing has been scheduled for Mon day evening, .March 24. Cahoon acted as party chief of the soil scientists staff while at the Agency. As the soil survey was completed, the other scientists were transferred and Cahoon remained to prepare a report on their findings. Prior to Ins service at the agen cy, Cahoon spent seven years with the Soil Conservation Service in the Southwest. Cahoon was a member of the Reservation Junior Chamber of Commerce.
