Mi-West Texas peace officers mowed down the accused killer of a deputy sheriff before he could pull the trigger on his cocked pistol last night. Sheriff Lcm Gabrel said the slain suspect was G. F. (Jack) McMichael, 3, an ex -convict sought in a two-state manhunt. Deputy Thad West, 40, was shot without warning yesterday morn ing while checking a baby selling report. Gabrel said McMichael was found at the home of a girl friend. Officers surrounded the house. The sheriff said McMichael came to the front door with a pistol in his hand, then dashed for the back door after spotting the deputies outside. "We shouted for him to halt," the sheriff said, "and he whirled and cocked his pistol." Several officers fired about the same time and McMichael fell without shooting. Gabrel said Ruby Lucllen I.an ford, 50, was charged with har boring a criminal. The manhunt spread as far as Hobbs, N.M., after McMichael fled the scene of the early morn ing shooting. Deputy West was killed as he walked into an apartment. The landlady, Mrs. Frank Matthews. said she rented the apartment to Mrs. Pat Ledbetter, 18, and Mc Michael under the names of Mrs. and Mrs. Ledbetter. With them were Mrs. I.edbet- ter's two children, 2 and 4 months old. Deputy Sheriff G. K. Kelly said West went to the apartment to check reports an effort had been made to sell the 4-month-old Cindy. Detective Capt. Al Smlthers said Mrs. Ledbetter told him she admitted West and told McMi chael the deputy was there. Mc Michael, Smithers quoted her as saying, walked out of the bath room shooting and West never had time to reach for his pistol. Kelly quoted Mrs. Ledbetter as saying, "I would never sell my baby." No charges were filed against Mrs. Ledbetter. Her children were taken over by the welfure office. TIME FOR A CHANGE MONOX, Ind. VPl You've had tips on horses. Well, here's a horse who can give you a lip. He knows how to win when he s losing. This has made Silky Sullivan. a 3-year-old, the sensational darl ing o( those who have read about him, seen him run. Early in a race he falls so far behind you'd think he was setting the pace for the next feature. As jockey Willie Harmatz. who rode Silky in several races, said: 'It sure gets lonesome back there." But then, when all seems ab solutely lost, this colt appears to shift gears. Within a stride or two he flares from a jaunty gallop to a blaze of speed. From dend last, usually, be begins to catch up. then pass. Horse after horse is left behind. And, at the last mo ment, he's in front. One of Silky's owners has to co behind the clubhouse wheneer the colt runs. It's doctor's orders. KF Woman Not To File Mrs. Josephine Kiltredge. a Klamalh Falls woman who has been exceptionally Active in lav study work and other community iiuercsi projects, saia today that she does not aspire to he a can didate for any public office this year. "I'll admit it scares me." says Silky's co-owner, retired banker rancher Phil Klipstein of Bakers field. Calif. Silky is beautiful big, well formed, shiny gold in the sun, his tail long and blond. Racetrack men call him a chestnut, in the shade. But the important facts about Silky are these: In his last two races he was officially measured trailing the lead horse by 31 lengths on Santa I Anita's backstretch. A runnine I length. In horse parlance, is about! 10 ieet. j Yet he charged up the stretch like a fire engine, after shifting, gears, and he won. j That was in one race. In the: other he did exactly the same thing, ana got beaten only by a neck. i Silky may be a Kentucky Derby candidate this year. His best re-1 corded time for the final quarter- i mile is 22 2-5 seconds, or about 40 m.p.h. Normal racehorses aver-j age about 37 1-2 m.p.h. for the final quarter, and slower ones 1 around 34 1-2 m.p.h. Not even Silky can win all the time, but he has won 6 of 11 races.
