OREGON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1958 4-H NEWS - VV N- vf I ! r'lunrtu iraf "'-iftftrtrtf LOYD JOHNSON County Clerk Hopeful Files YREKA Latest candidate for the post of county clerk of Siski you County, is Loyd Johnson, Vreka life insurance man, who an nounced his candidacy for the job last week. He will compete with Mrs. Rachel Cordes, incumbent county clerk, who has announced her intent to seek election to the office to which she was appointed to complete the term vacated by the late Waldo Smith. Born in Montana, Johnson re ceived his education there, and af ter graduating from high school attended Montana State College at Bozeman. Later, moving to Los Angeles, he spent many years as en automobile salesman and deal er until the outbreak of World War II. Johnson then closed out his business and was employed by the Standard Shipyards at San Pedro as a material expediter and coordinator. After the war, Johnson and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Yreka where they established their resi dence. Mrs. Johnson resumed her work as a teacher, and he took up the work of handling live stock supplies, and the buying and selling of livestock. From 1948 until 1955. he held a half-interest in the Siskiyou Sporting Goods Store, working as co-manager until he sold out. He then became a special agent for the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company. Johnson is an active member of the Yreka Lions Club, with a 10-year-perfect attendance record. He has served as Lions Club pres ident, zone chairman, and deputy district governor. He is also an active member of the Masonic Lodge, and its other affiliations, having held prominent offices in most of them. Johnson has also been a director of the Yreka Chamber of Commerce, and at present holds the post of president of the S i i k 1 y 0 u Consolidated Sportsmen's Association. HENLEY SHEEP CLUB The Henley Sheep Club met at tho hnmA nf Tir .Irw Rikpr Feh- ruary 12. President Marilyn Mack presided at me meeting. Dr. Joe Riker and Arnold Brandt told about diseases of ewes and lambs. Now mpmhers of the Hcnlev Sheep Club are Roger Warren, Ar thur Warren, Steve Cheyne, James Nelson and Janell Daniel. The club is planning a basketball game. The next meeting will be ai Steven Skinner's home, March 12. Refreshments were served by Dotty Riker. Slevtn Skinner fvsws Reporter VOLTS AND WATTS 4-H ELECTRICITY CLUB The organizational meeting of the Volts and Watts 4-H Electricity Club was held at Merle Jackson's home February 14, 1958. Scott Skin ner led the 4-H pledge at the first of the meeting, then Eldcn Bleak led the flag salute. We talked about the experiments we can do with our electricity book. Our junior leader, Allen Jackson told us about positive and negatives of a battery and a light. Then he showed us how to make our flash light with a one cell battery, and a 12 or 15 size wire and a 114 watt bulb. Bob Graham News Reporter MALIN BEEF CLUB Ray Petersen, assistant county agent, was guest speaker at the third meeting of the Malin Beef Club, Sunday, February 9. Petersen used charts to explain to the 21 members present the ad vantages of feeding balanced rations. He stressed the importance of weighing feed and choosing it wise ly for the best results in each in dividual calf. Mary Jayne Fisk, president, in troduced the guest and thanked him on behalf of the club. The meeting was held at the Hab Wil son home. New member Wanda Clark was initiated, and Charlie McAul iffe was welcomed into the club Leaders Earl Wilson and Wayne Fisk were present. Plans were made for the next meeting at the Elmont Kcnyon home, on March 9, where Norman Jacob will instruct in the making of rope halters. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Wilson at the close of the meeting. Susie Wilson News Reporter GRANGE NEWS TULELAKE - Tulelake Grange members, meeting February 13, heard a report that women of the grange who prepared and served the dinner for the annual Growers Association banquet, February 6, had cleared $200. A satisfactory sum was also realized from the first of a series of public card parties. Money is to be used to complete remodeling of the grange ball. The second public card party of the series wilh refreshments and prizes is planned for February 27. The membership voted opposi tion to the proposed expenditure of the six million dollar engineer ing project on the Feather River, until further study of the plan is made. Opposing votes will be sub mitted to Slate Senator Randolph Collier and Assemblywoman Paul ine Davis. The business mooting followed a potluck supper.
