KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Actor Refuses To Conform To Hollywood Way Of Life By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD I A maverick emong movie stars is Aldo Kay. The guy simply refuses to be have like a star. He doesn't go to the fashionable parties, nor to the noted night spots. His favorite hangouts are a couple of off-the-beaten-path taverns. He owns no fancy automobile. Matter of fact, he hasn't any. As for the luxurious home he's cur rently living in a friend's apart ment. Obviously, Hollywood hasn't changed the free-living, outspoken constable from Crockett (Calif.) in the seven years he has been here. That is a matter of irritation to some people here, notably his boss. Aldo is employed by Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Pictures and the last tycoon of the movie business. He is the sole remaining studio boss who rules his realm with an absolute and imperious hand. Naturally, the presence of a rebel like Aldo spelled -trouble. 11 started after Aldo's first starring film, "The Marrying Kind," with Judy Holliday. Aldo had gone all over the country to exploit the film and had over taxed his expense account by sendine home presents to his family and Jeff Donnell, whom he was courting. "I'll admit I overdid it," said Aldo. "When I got back and went to get my salary check one week, there wasn't any. I was told they were taking the money out of my check for the presents. If they were going to be that way, that was ail right with me." He was earning $200 a week at the time. He is still working for a three figure salary, though Columbia racks up $100,000 for loaning him out. His latest service is with KKO for "The Naked and the Dead It has been over two years since he worked for his own studio. Nowadays he visits only the mail room to pick up personal letlers. "But it will all be over in August," the actor said. "That's the end of my seven-year con tract. And what a happy day that will be!" (Radm og IT.O NOTE: Th. ABC was the first to introduce and develop the "adult" Westerns which now are so popular on all three networks. "The Western trend certainly is not riding out," Treyz said in an interview. "But I don't see any big expansion in Westerns this year and I don't think that they represent the bulwark of our programing." Treyz said that the newest thing in entertainment programing on ABC will be "a type of action show set in current times. It will involve strong stories and strong heroes and contemporary stiua tions. "They will have the quality of feature motion pictures and deal in shades of gray as Maverick does rather than in black and white. And by 'Western' I mean a good man and a bad man and a chase." Warner Brothers will produce the filmed programs, which will be introduced on the network next fall. He said he didn't cut his side burns off because of impending Army duty. "I've worn long sideburns in all my other movies," he explained, "so I figured I'd -be a littlr dif ferent in 'King Creole.' " Elvis finishes the picture March 14, takes a train for his home town of Memphis and expects to be at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., by March 22. "I'm looking forward to going Into the Army, he said.
