BASIN BRIEFS Viiitlng Gary Cogburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cogburn, Klamath Falls, is spending sever al days with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cogburn of East- side. Ill Ed Hartzog, Eastside. is in the Lakeview Hospital suffering from a stroke. His son and family. David Hartzog, Pullman, Washing ton, have been in Eastside on ac count of the elder Hartzog's ill ness. To Minnesota Mrs. Eileene Barry, Eastside, has gone to St. Paul, Minnesota, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Eileene McKee, and family. The McKee's are the parents of 12 children. Improving Mrs. A. E. Ryck- man. Tulelake, js recovering in Portland following throat 'surgery in St. Vincent s Hospital last week. She was accompanied to Portland by Mr. Ryckman. Card Party March of Dimes card party will be given by the Northern RebeKah Lodge No. 208, Altunis, in the Odd Fellow s Tem ple, Alturas, at 8 p.m., January 31. Admission is one dollar per person. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded. Back Home Mr. and Mrs. John O'Neil have moved back to their home in Eastside after spending several weeks with their son and family, Mr. and Mrs.' Lee O'Neil. Mrs. John 0 Neil was convalesc ing after eye surgery done in Port land in November. Scholarship Omer A.' Schneid er, Malin, has been awarded a scholarship covering partial tuition fees for winter and spring term studies at Oregon State College. The scholarship, which will pay $46 tuition fees for each of the two terms, is sponsored by the state system of higher education. Schneider, a 1936 graduate of Ma lin High School,, is a sophomore in the school of business and tech nology. Band Librarian Virginia Burk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mil- burn Burk, Bonanza, has recently been elected as librarian in the college band at Southern Oregon College. Good Weather Mr. and Mrs. Fred Longfellow, Eastside, are en joying the good weather in Oro ville, California, while visiting their daughter and family, the Phil Carrol's. Hog Butchering Several neigh bors gathered at the Walt Lightle ranch near Eastside on January 20 for an old fashioned hog butch ering. Mrs. Lightle served dinner at noon to the workers, Klrst Child-Mr. and Mrs. Clif ford Dodson, Eastside, are the par ents of a new son, their first child. ' Relief Society Mrs. Merle O'Neil, Eastside, and Frances Ste vens, Lillian McDonald, Delphi Rudd, Ellen Byington and Orvilla Stein, all of Lakeview, attended a Relief Society Union meeting at the L.D.S. He received treatment through the Klamath: County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eugene, then was a patient in the Crippled Children's Hospital, Port land. Gail still wears braces on both legs but last sum mer he passed his Red Cross beginners swim test, goes to, Fremont School. He is the son of Gail P. Putman, 2020 Gar den Avenue. Co-chairman is Dixie Nen del, right. i Brutal Slaying Laid To Son FORT SMITH. Ark. W-Police today pressed an intensive search for Billy Joe Burns, a 24-ycar-old former mental patient wanted for questioning in connection with the mutilation slaying of his mother." "We can't waste any time," said Chief of Detectives Clyde Grigsby. "We don't know whether he's dan gerous to others or not." The head of Mrs. Edna Burns, 56, was found by some children yesterday in the vestibule of a Catholic church here. Police lat er broke -into the locked Burns home and discovered the headless corpse in a pool of 'blood on the kitchen floor., - Burns -was' -released . -from a mental hospital last year, Grrgsby said. Phone Work Tops Million Keeping pace with rapid indus-! trial and residential growth in the Klamath Falls area, Pacific Tele phone spent more than one mil lion dollars on construction proj ects here in 1957. Recently compiled figures show, according to Manager R. C. Bail ey, that the company spent $1,100, 000 on expansion and improvement of service in Klamath Falls the last year. That brings to almost $1,970,000 the amount spent on tele phone construction here in the past four years. Year-end records also show that there were 13,686 telephones in the Klamath Falls exchange at the end of December. That's a net in crease of 296 over the year. Topping a list of 13 projects val ued at more than $10,000 each, was construction of a microwave relay center at Haymaker Mountain. It is one of two centers in a new system which will increase long distance voice paths between Klam ath Falls, Medford and other Ore gon and California points. More local switching equipment was installed at the Klamath Falls central office, along with five switchboard positions, power equip ment and an expanded test nd service center. Local aerial and underground cable was added in eight other projects. SCBMECHANIZED!
