(or 10 Douglas DC-8 long-range and 11 new-type Boeing 720 medium-range airplanes to be delivered in 1960 were an nounced today by W. A. Patterson, president of United Air Lines. The 21 airplanes represent the second stage of United s Jet Age equipment program, the first stage of which will commence in 1959 with a fleet of 30 Douglas DC-8s already on order and representing an investment of 175 million dol lars. United thus is now com mitted for 51 Jetliners amounting to 275 million dollars, "Our Douglas DC-8 fleet will covin- our basic long-range jet re quirements and will operate gem erally over schedule segments ranging from 1,500 miles to the transcontinental nonstops and California-Hawaii service," Patterson said. "The newly developed Boeing In termediate Jet, to be powered with a new and lighterweight version of the Pratt and Whitney J-57 en gine, now enables United to ad vance to the speed and efficiency of straight jet aircraft for stage lengths from less than 400 miles to the Chicago-West Coast seg ments." v- The new-type four-engine Hoe ing, capable of cruise speeds in excess of 600 miles per hour, will carry 100 to 125 passengers de pending upon cabin configuration. The Douglas DC-8 is materially larger and will accommodate 120 to 150 passengers. Both aircraft will have substantial cargo capa city as well. The new Boeing Intermediate Jet will be capable of operation into and out of any city presently served by United's four-engine piston-type DC-7 fleet. "The 40 DC-8 units will serve our long-range requirements for the next several years," Pat terson stated. "The new Boeing will enable us to undertake transi tion of our intermediate service to jets beginning in 1960. As we crys tallize our plans for the equip ment required to convert entirely to turbine aircraft and to serve our market which we foresee dou bling by 1965, more intermediate units will be. added in the inter vening years to phase out the re maining medium-range piston air craft. "We expect our third Jet Age stage will be the acquisition of turbine powered aircraft for our short-range segments which we are postponing until we have our long and medium-range equipment pro gram we.l advanced." The company arranged financing amounting to 150 million dollars in 1955 when it placed its origi nal order for 30 DC-8s. Arrange ments are being completed for an Aid Needed For Victims additional 100 million dollars in the form of bank credit from a group of banks headed by the First Na tional City Bank of New York This financing is consistent with financing worked out for purchases of equipment in the past. Patterson said the 10 addition al DC - 8s to be powered with the basic J-57 engine will be de livered during the spring and early sumVner of 1960. Deliveries of the 11 new-type Boeing 720 will be re ceived between April and Septem ber of I960. The Boeing 720 will have a wing span of 130'i feet: length, 134'j feet: height, 38',i feet. It will carry 11.500 gallons of fuel and will lift a take-off payload of 31,000 pounds. Cargo space of 1,250 cubic feet will accommodate air mail, ex press, freight and baggage. Cruis ing altitude will range between 25, 000 and 40.000 feet. Ewins icon, 81, cused of murdering his wealthy wife. Scott was indicted by the Los Angeles County Grand Jury for murder of his missing wile, sirs. Evelyn Throsby Scott. 63, and for stealing from her $600,000 estate, Her i idy has never been found. Mrs. Saint told Youth for Christ rally here that she plans to carry on the work of her hus band, Nathaniel, one of five Amer ican missionaries killed by the Indians. Another of those five victims was James Elliott of Portland. His widow now is doing mission work in the South American country.
