OREGON PAGE SEVEN Marine Gets Beating Rap YOKOSUKA, Japan Wl One Texas Marine was convicted and one acquitted by a U.S. Navy court-martial today on charges of roughing up American sailors in brig at Sasebo naval base. Cpl. James T. Ray, 21, Texas City, was sentenced to 15 days at hard labor without conunement, forefeiture of $30 pay,. and reduc tion in rank to private first class for punching a prisoner in the stomach. He was found innocent of a second charge filed by an other sailor. Set. Bobby Phillips, 22, Tyler, was cleared of a similar charge of striking a sailor. Ray's sentence is subject to re view. The Texas Leathernecks are among 16 Marines being court martialed for alleged brutality at the south Japan base. So far three have been convicted and two ac-Quitted. Ray was convicted on testimony , of Seaman Donald Cherry, 21, Chicago. Cherry, who was con victed for using marijuana and heroin aboard ship, told of being punched "a definite blow" in the stomach by Ray. Phillips was cleared of a charge of punching Curtis iisaen, ti, Houston, Tex. Another Marine, Sgt. Robert J. Irvin, Newark, N.J. told the court Phillips was not on duty at the time. Regime Eyes Plot By U.S. JAKARTA, Indonesia W A spokesman today said the Indones ian government is -studying docu ments purporting to link the U.S. Kmbassy in Jakarta with a plot to overthrow President Mikarnos regime. The official. Foreign Ministry Secretary General Suwito Kusumo widagodo, did not say from whom the documents were obtained or If they were believed genuine. However, Indonesian newspa pers for several days have been playing up a Communist Chinese report that vandals who raided the U.S. Embassy on Formosa ob tained photostats of messages showing the Jakarta embassy was involved in a plot against Sukarno. There was no comment from (he American Embassy. ? COMPOSER OF "Blue Suede Shoes," Carl Perkins, will appear Thanksgiving night in the old armory with his band. Perkins will be featured with Johnny Cash and his Grand Ole Opry unit in a dance and show. Also appearing on the program will be singer Don Deal. The show is a Baldy Evans presentation. . CLASS REGISTRATIONS MOUNT SHASTA Tonight, rep resentatives of Siskiyou Junior Col lege will be at the Mount Shasta High School to accept registra tions for adult study. Dates and time for holding various classes will be decided later, but there will be no registration fee charged. Students, however, will be re quired to secure their own books, and other supplies. Trial Opens For Ex-FBI Man Accused Of Acting For Trujillo WASHINGTON un The gov ernment called witnesses Tuesday in an effort to prove Uiat former FBI Agent John Joseph Frank acted illegally as an agent for Generalissimo Rafael Trujillo. Trial of Frank, charged with failing to register as an agent for the Dominican Republic's strong man, went into its second day. op posing attorneys estimated it may last two weeks. FBI Aaent Fred C. Woodcock told the federal district court jury Monday that Frank told him he had acted as a security adviser for Trujillo on three occasions. But he said Frank took the posi tion that this did not make it nec essary for him to register as an agent of a foreign principal. Woodcock aaid Frank told of setting up security precautions for a Trujillo visit to Spain in 1944, a visit to Kansas City in 1955 and for a Dominican fair in Decem ber 195S. In an opening statement Mon day, Chief Prosecutor William G. Hundley said tne government would show that Frank made a personal investigation of the New York activities of Dr. Jesus Ma ria De Galindez and Nicholas SU- fa. De Galindez, a Columbia Uni versity professor, disappeared from New York City in March. Both he and Silfa have been identified - as critics of the Tru jillo regime. Hundley told the jury the gov ernment also would prove that Frank worked with Gerald J. Murphy, Eugene, Ore., 23-year-old pilot who vanished in the Domin ican capital last Dec. S. An official Dominican explana tion of Murphy's disappearance said he had been killed by another pilot who later committed sui cide. Strong doubts of the story have been voiced by Murphy's family and others. Some reports said Murphy spoke of having some knowledge of the circumstances surrounding .the disappearance of De Galindez be fore Murphy himself vanished. Hundley said the government also would prove that Frank worked with Murphy, and rented an airplane that was flown to the Dominican Republic. Hundley did not say who piloted the plane or who flew in it. Woodcock testified that Frank WILLING TO TRAVEL QUITMAN, Ga. (UP)-A thief who stole a new car apparently was planning on traveling. He also took 300 gallons of gasoline from a storage tank and parked trucks. Woodcock said Frank also maintained that he had no knowledge of Dominican activities in this country and had no information about the disap pearance of De Galindez.
