NOVEMBER 15, 1957 This Is Big Weekend For Bowl Contenders By UNITED PRESS It lon(!-renge odds hold up, New Year's Day will find Ohio State vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl, Ok lahoma vs. . Duke in the Orange Bowl, Texas A St M vs. Army or Navy in the Cotton Bowl and any combination of teams from south of the .Mason-Dixon line in the Sugar and Gator Bowls. Oklahoma, the only team al ready assured of a bowl trip, steps outside the Big Kight Saturday and is favored by 18 points over Notre Dame in a game to be tele vised nationally (by NBC). That three-touchdown spread surprised football observers because Okla homa, despite 47 straight wins, has gone through anxious mo ments this season. On top of that, it's an open secret that Notre Oame has been pointing all year for the Sooners. Iowa is a one-point favorite over Ohio State, Oregon seven over Southern Cal., Duke seven over Clemson, Texas A 4 M seven over Rice and Tennessee seven over Mississippi. While the Ohio State-Iowa battle will crown the Big Ten champion, Iowa is barred from the Rose Bowl because it made the trip last New Year's Day. That means Ohio State can make the run fur the roses with a victory over Iowa or Michigan, its opponent next week. Beans Reardon Helps With Promotions In LONG BEACH, Calif. UP One of the staunch, but not so staid citizens of Long Beach, Calif., these days is none other than the eminent Mr. Beans Reardon, onetime firebrand of the National League umpiring staff. Mr. Beans, who will be GO his next birthday, retired from the national pastime a few campaigns ago to enter the world of busi ness. It is a pleasure to report that he is a smashing success as a beer distributor. In fact, he is making so much money that he is looking for new ways to get rid of it. The only time New York fans saw Rivers he lost a decision to Spider Webb, Feb. 15 in the Garden. His record is 37-5-2. NBC will broadcast and tele cast at 10 p. m., EST. Schaves hasn't been the spectac ular player that Mikan was, and his Syracuse team didn't terrorize the league as did the Minneapolis Lakers of Mikan's heyday, so six-fnot-cight-inch Dolph didn't get the headlines that Mikan did. Duke needs only a win over Clemson or next Saturdays foe. North Carolina. Texas A 4 M. rated No. 1 by the United Press Board of Coaches can sew up the host role in the Cotton Bowl by beating Rice. The Cotton Bowl Committee is believed to be leaning toward the winner of the Nov. 30 Army-Navy classic for the visiting team. If the service academies nix a Cotton Bowl appearance, the Tennessee-Mississippi game probably will produce one team for the Cot ton Bowl and one for the Sugar. The Gator Bowl announced dur ing the week that it is eyeing nine teams Texas A 4 M, Texas Christian, Texas, Arkansas, Ten nessee. Mississippi, Mississippi State, Vandcrbilt and Miami of Florida. Miami is a seven-point choice over Maryland in the only major game frriday night. Auburn and North Carolina State, normally considered among bowl candidates, must slay home because of NCAA penalties. Oregon plays Southern California Saturday in the Pacific Coast Conference football feature. Strangely enough, if Oregon wins both the game and the re turn trip to the southland, the Ducks can give part of the credit to little Idaho, a club they beat 9-6 early in the season. A victory in Los Angeles would give Oregon a 6-1 won. loss rec ord. Stanford, hanging on by a hair with a 3-2 mark, plays one less conference game than Ore gon. Idaho isn't on the Indian schedule. Thus if Oregon wins and Stan ford beats Oregon State at Cor vallis, the Ducks can't help but wind up with a better percent age. In other conference tussles Washington meets California at Berkeley in a battle of losers and Idaho winds up a so-so season against Washington State at Pull man. UCLA comes north to Stock ton, Calif., Saturday night to meet independent College of the Pacific. At the season s start few peo ple paid much attention to Coach Len Casanova's Oregonians. The talk was wait till next year. Ap parently, the football team wasn't listening. It proceeded to stay un defeated in the conference until last week when underdog Wash ington pulled a 13-6 upset. Naturally, Southern Cal, winner of but one PCC game, goes in as the underdog. USC lost 35-7 last week to Stanford, a team Oregon beat 27-20. Stanford, led by quarterback Jack Douglas and fullback Chuck Shea, takes on a team of defend ing PCC champions back on the winning trail after dropping two conference games. After losing to UCLA and Washington, the Beav ers bounced back against Wash ington State and California. California and Washington shapes up as a battle of the split T. Both teams have new head coaches and both have received their lumps in their freshman season. Washington's Coach Jim Owens has won two games, Cal's Pete Elliott one. Washington State, one of the four teams eligible for the Pasadena trip, began strong, but faded and lost to Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA. Idaho, which ploys only three PCC schools, has a 4-3-1 overall record. UCLA, already, assured of its ninth straight winning season, goes after its seventh victory in nine starts at Stockton. Pacific has lost only one. to Cincinnati and has been tied by Kansas State and Idaho. Springfield, No. 2 in the Asso ciated Press poll, will be host at night to McMinnville, No. 7, in the first contest of the class A-l quarterfinals. Springfield won its way into the playoffs last weekend with a sur prise victory over South Eugene, which had been ranked earlier as the state's top team most of the season. Springfield features a stout de fense which yielded only 59 points while the team posted a season record of seven victories, one loss and one tie. And it has a strong Bruins Whip Black Hawks, Toronto Next By UNITED PRESS The Boston Bruins, winners in two straight games for the first time since the first 10 days of the season, prepared today for a weekend home-and-home series with the Toronto Maple Leafs which could put them back into the thick of the National Hockey League race. The Bruins have a big edge In the weekend schedule because first-place Montreal, minus the services of Maurice Richard, will be playing two games with second- place New York and third-place Chicago will be playing two games witn last-place Detroit. The Bruins took a firm grip on tourtn place, one point behind Chi cago, when they scored four goals in the first two periods Thursday night and went on to whip the Black Hawks, s-2. at Boston. McMinnville won all of its nine games, with quarterback Don Carlson completing 7p per cent of his passes. His favorite target has been end Jeff Durham, the team's leading scorer. Jefferson, which along with McMinnville is the state's only unbeaten and untied class A-l team, can clinch the Portland city league championship and a state semi-final berth by downing tough Washington in a regular league game. Grant could tie for the title with a victory over formidable Lincoln, the league's third place team, pro vided Jefferson is upset. A vote of league 'schools then would be necessary to choose Portland's entry in the playoffs. In the class A-2 playoff opener, Willamina, the highest scoring team in Oregon class A ranks, will be at home to Dallas. Fullback Bob Nokleby, with 116 points, and halfback Walt Pond, with 108, have been Willamina's big guns as it scored 304 points in winning nine games ' without a defeat. Powers and Monroe will open the class B playoffs with a game at Junction City Friday afternoon. Monroe 'was 1956 co-champion with Stanfield, which ahjo made the playoffs again. Nine opening round games are scheduled for Saturday. South Salem, No. 1 in the poll, will be at Milton-Freewater Satur day afternoon, and Medford, No. 9, will travel to Beaverton, No. 4, for a night class A-l game. PGA Selects Medal Play LONG BEACH, Calif. W The Professional Golfers Assn. cham pionship next year will be a four day, 72-hole medal play tourna ment rather than the man-to-man type elimination play that was started in 1916. This was unanimously voted Thursday night by delegates at tending the 31st annual PGA con vention. The delegates decided the 1958 Professional Golfers Assn. cham pionship will be played at Llan arch Country Club in Philadelphia between July 14 to 20 for a prob able purse of $40,000. The match-play competition has proved a losing financial proposi tion over the years. The gate re ceipts dwindled as name players were eliminated during the prog ress of the tournaments. And sev eral of the nation's top golfers refused to enter the championship on the grounds that 36-hole-a-day play for several days was more trouble than it was worth. A win for Woody Hayes will give the Ohio Buckeyes the Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. A victory for the Hawkeycs will give them the title, and open up the Western Conference Rose Bowl picture, giving Michigan State an outside chance for Pasadena. We like Iowa because the Hawks are more versatile and have bet ter balance. They'll win, 20-13. Elsewhere in the nation.
