Ralston recently installed of ficers of the state grange at Paso Robles. . Officers Installed were Wayne Wilier, master; Bert Hampel, over seer: Peal Freeman, lecturer: Jim JlcClure, steward; Shiloh Hill, assistant steward; Or a Wilder, chaplain: Alice Martin, treasurer; Ken Wilder, gate keeper; Marie Mahon, Ceres; Ora McClure, Pa mona: Irene Clark, Flora: Doro thy Hill, lady assistant steward; Mary Ann Hampi.1. flag bearer: and Lilliam Rowlison, pianist. Members of the installing team were Laura Cawley, pianist; Pau line Mallow, master; Maud Cannon, Ida Wheeler, Rose Sylvia. Billie Walters, Orean Willis, Hilda Coo ley, and Regina J. Brown. Ac companying the group from Green horn Grange were Mrs. Vayne Ral ston, John Cawley, Roy Wheeler Maud Cannon. The evening's program included piano selections by Maria Gomez, recitations by Clara Gibson and . songs by Wayne Miller accom panied by Glen Wilm on the guitar. Felix Gomez, retiring master, give an appreciative talk. Gladys Wilm announced a tur key dinner will be given by the grange on November 14 at St. John's Parish Hall with service from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Refreshments were served to 65 members and guests and dancing concluded the festivities. Speaker Set For Session Brig. Gen. Louis H. Foote, North Pacific Division engineer, will speak on "Water Resources De velopment of the Columbia River Basin," at the morning session of '"Ihe Oregon Farm Bureau Conven tion in Eugeno on November 8, 11)57. General Foote has headed the North Pacific Division for three and one half years and super vises the civil nnd military con struction programs for this divi sion which included Alaska. He is also In charge of the Columbia River '308' report covering the en tire Columbia River Basin includ ing the Canadian portion. General Foote will review the power, irrigation and flood control planning of the various develop ments. Color slides and charts will be used in the presentation. Dr. Von T. Ellsworth will be the second speaker at the Novem bcr 8 morning session. His sub jeet is "Zoning and Taxation of Agricultural Lands. Dr. Ellsworth worked on the United States Tariff Commission as a special expert on tariffs, and served as head of Agricultural Economics and Farm Manage ment at Utah Agricultural Col lege, and later as associate in agricultural economics at the Uni versity of 'California before be coming director of research for the California Farm Bureau Fed ' eration. World Trip Hearing End SEATTLE ifl An adventurer who sailed an amphibious Jeep across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans arrived here Wednesday with the hardest stretches of his round-the-world land-sea trip be hind him. Australian-born lien Carlin. SI. was alone in the jeep, the "Half Safe," as he pulled in from Alas ka. Boyde Dc Menle, Phoenix, Ariz., last of a series of partners who had accompanied Carlin at various stages of the trip, was forced to leave him in the Far North because uf illness in his family. Carlin said he planned to drive to San Francisco, then swing back northeast to Montreal, where he started seven years iiro. Carlin recalled that he actually started his adventure with his wife in 1948 when they set out from Montreal to try to sail to Casa blanca. After five attempts, they linally made it in Ui.vi. In the intervening years, Carlin slowly made his way around the world and popped lip in the news again early this year in Japan De Mente was his new partner. and together they sailed the "Half hnfe across the North Pacific from Japan to Alaska and over land from Alatka to the states. Carlin said he is glad the long trip is about over. Siskiyou County Tells Gain InTax Exempt Property DUNSMUIR Tax exempt prop erty in Siskiyou County jumped this year to $1,978,335 assessed val uation or an increase of $89,235 over last year's $1,889,103, L. D. Babe) Taylor, county tax asses sor, revealed today. Exemptions to veterans account ed for the largest proportion of this figure. Last year 2,443 vet erans were granted exemptions on property assessed at $1,703,170. This year 2,594 veterans were granted exemptions on property assessed at $1,788,780, an increase of $83,810. A tax exemption currently being sought by the St. Germain Foun dation would more than double this year's exemption increase, il granted, Taylor noted. Current Plane Crash Victim Found WALLA WALLA l,H - Lemuel Kelso Jr.. 2!l. Santa Barbara, Calif., was found dead Wednes day in the wreckage of a light plane some 45 miles east of here. far beyond his destination. The California flier had van ished Tuesday while on a 75-mile flight from Condon to Pendleton in northeastern Oregon. There was no explanation how he gut so far off his course. Kelso had rented the plane at Pendleton to fly a friend to Con don, then headed back to Pendle ton in the craft, a Cessna 172. Ground and air parties were searching for the plane between Condon and Pendleton when a Washington . highway department crew spotted the wreckage about a half-mile from the main high way between Walla Walla and Spokane. The scene was about eight miles southeast of Starbuck, Wash. Several motorists had scon the wreckage earlier in the day, hut believed it was that of an old crash and did not report it. It appeared the Cnliforninn had been trying to land and hit a hillside. The craft broke in half, with the tall section and fuselage side by side. Other wreckage was scattered over a wide area. Kelso had been mapping in the Pendleton area for about a month for the Mark Herd Mapping Serv ice of Santa Barbara. holdings of the St. Germain Foun dation are assessed at $110,720 and the corporation is seeking to have the property in its entirety de clared exempt as a religious or ganization. Taylor, in comparing Siskiyou County's tax exemptions with the $4,549,725 of Shasta County, noted the per capita burden was much higher. Over 61 per cent of Siski you County is federally owned. Taylor pointed out. Shasta County nas over 40 per cent ot their tax roll paid for by public utilities and Siskiyou County has less than 30 per cent paid by public utili ties. These factors phis a small population make tax. exemptions particularly significant, Taylor said. FINE SUSPENDED McCLOUD Twenty dollars of a $25 fine was suspended when Herbert Dale Daniels. 18, of Nor man, Oklahoma, was charged with lailure to yield right of way and excessive speed at his appearance in justice court on November 4.
