Take the case of Ricardo Mont alban, who just opened in the calypso caper, "Jamaica." Some of his ordeal is described in his feelings the moment before he went on slaw: "You talk about a man's life flashing before his eyes as he is drowning that is exactly how I felt. 1 thought of everything: my mother, my father, my boyhood, dreams I have had. "Ithought what would happen If the play was a flop, how I would have to take my wife and feur children back to California. I wondered if my voice would hold up.' Augusta DABWEY J Tells Ordeal Opening Rlcardo's ordeal was made worse by a cold he had picked up during the tryout run in Boston. When he arrived at the Imperial theater at noon before opening night, his voice was hoarse. He did a run-through whispering his lines and talking his songs. Then he went home for a half hour rest. He was back at the theater at 6:15. "I always get there early," he explained. I m the kind of a guy who sleeps with three alarm clocks. I've always got to be sure I ll be there on time. He started getting ready for the snow at 6:30, aided by a dresser and makeup man. "Between the acls, I felt terri ble," Ricardo said. "I was de pressed. 1 thought I wasn't set ting across. I guess it was a nat ural letdown after five weeks' re hearsal and six weeks on the road. I determined 1 would try ever harder in the second act." When ft was all over the ap plause at the curtain calls was heartening. Well-wishers jammed into his dressing room to offer congratulations. Instead of Sardi's, Ricardo went to a small party given by a den tist friend on Park Avenue and dropped in at the Waldorf cele bration for the cast given by his co-itar, Lena Home. Last year, shows had to wait on the road or delay production be cause all available Broadway the aters fere taken. This year, the number of floDs and near-flops has taken care of the theater shortage. A United rress tally shows that of the 32 legitimate theaters along Broad way, nine are dark and awaiting tenants, inis is one gauge of the new season s quality, for its ax iomatic that a rousing theatrical season leads to a shortage of the aters. There have been 18 openings so far this season and eight of the newcomers already have closed or posted closing notices. Of the 10 survivors, only three are doing capacity business: "West Side Mory," -Look Back In Anger" and "Jamaica." The other "standing room oniv" hits are carryovers such as "Auntie Mame" (47 weeks old); "Bells Are Ringing" (49 weeks); "New Girl In Town" (25 weeks) and of course, "My Fair Lady" idb weeks . It's noteworthy that none of the new "SRO" hits can qualify as a smasn. -look Back In Anger." a serious play by British play wright John Osborne, found five local critics in its corner while two dissented. "West Side Story" found the critics unanimously in favor, but somewhat restrained in their enthusiasm. "Jamaica," which opened last week and stars Lena Home, found the critics im pressed with Miss Home and the music but little else.
