OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN Top Collegiate Grid Teams Also Lead Defense Records By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Defense, once junked as being too subtle for the average fan, suddenly has made a comeback in major college football on the unbeaten records of such national powers as Auburn and Iowa. Auburn lops the list in total de- week. Iowa, once tied, is No. 1 in rushing defense. And every major unbeaten club in the nation is among the lead ers in one defensive category or another while less than half of them are up there in offense. Only Texas A & SI, the leader fense for , the fourth consecutive in this week's Associated Press poll, is missing from the unde feated powers that show up high in the defense statistics released Thursday by the NCAA Service Bureau. Auburn, getting stingier each game, has permitted an average of but 136.7 yards a game in the six played to date. That was the estimate Wednes day of Frank Lane, general man ager of the St. Louis Cardinals. who attended the circuit's 1958 schedule-making meeting. A schedule was adopted intro ducing major league baseball to fie West Coast April 15, opening day. which sends the Los Angeles Dodgers to the San Francisco Gi ants. Other openers include Chi cago at St. Louis, Philadelphia at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh at Mil waukee. The official schedule will be an nounced completely in December or January but each club is per mitted to publicize its home schea ule in its city at an earlier date yet to be set.
