Associated Press Labor Reporter WASHINGTON Wl -Suspension from the AFL-CIO puts the big Teamsters Union in the position of a naughty little boy put in a corner he's got to decide wheth er he's going to be good or bad. Except perhaps federation is wounded pride, nobody s been hurt yet in labor's corruption cleanup drive. But the parent federation is ready to wield a spanking, in the form of outright expulsion in De cember, unless the truck driver union agrees to mend its ways and oust its president-elect James K. Holla. Both the Teamsters and George Meany, the Ar L.-CIO s president and the man calling the federa tion's shots in handling the Team sters situation, have avoided doing anything so far that would end all hope of healing the breach The Teamsters executive board been to give the union's leaders tune to decide their own fate so far as the AFL-CIO is concerned. "Very frankly," Meany says, "we want to keep the Teamsters in this federation. We will not pay the price that the Teamsters evi dently want us to pay. which was indicated by1 their actions at their convention. "We want to keep them in, in compliance with the constitution, that is their decision and not ours." Meany said he's holding up or ders for the scores of state and city AFL-CIO groups to oust Teamsters from their member ships and official posts. He also i has held up orders to cancel working arrangements by other AFL-CIO unions with Teamster units. Hcffa said in Chicago yesterday that the Teamsters will support AFL-CIO unions, including their meets here tomorrow to decide ! strikes, whether the union is inside what to do. Among rumcrs on or outside the federation what might happen are that Hoffa may agree to step cut or that the union may decide to hold another convention to elect new officers. Wi Simmering unrest among crimi nally insane patients at theState Mental Hospital blew up into a dramatic nine-hour revolt that ended harmlessly last night for 36 hostages. It was all a misunderstanding and there will be no changes in the program," said Dr. Garrett, lleyns, state director of institu tions, in two radio broadcasts the rebels ordered him to make be fore they would give up. An inmate then asked by tele phone that Heyns also assure them that popular Dr. h.. R. Hodcson would be retained as medical di rector of the security unit. Heyns went across the street to another station and added a promise about Hodgson in a second broadcast. Only minutes after lleyns re turned from Spokane, the inmates told the 17 guards on the night shift, waiting outside to get ready to come in, that the hostages would be released when they ar rived at the door. They were. The hostages came out tho gate one by one and were greeted by tearful wives who had waited in the rain for hours, watching while state patrolmen unloaded rifles and shotguns from their cars (or a possible assault, and waiting whilo Heyns, Hodgson and Dr. G. Lee Sandritter, hospital superin tendent, conferred with inmates in side. Albert Hutchings. chief security guard at the building, resigned Monday at Heyns request and the inmates had read newspaper ac counts of it. Heyns said they ap parently thought Hutchings' de parture would change the treat ment system. Hutchings, dressed in civilian clothes, was called into the two hour conference between inmate leaders and Heyns at the request of Edwin Thomas, serving time (or second degree assault and rape from King .County (Seattle! Hutchings walked alone into the building, waving at an occasional patient he saw in the building, lleyns said he made "a very good presentation" and helped a lot. He didn't say he would be rehired and Hutchings said he wouldn't go back. Thomas, identified by guards as one of the ringleaders, was also a member in the l'J55 revolt at the State Penitentiary at Walla Walla. He has been here six months for psychiatric treatment. "We were very well treated, played cards and listened to the radio after the first tension wore o(f,' said Guard Roger Blue. "We were fed and weren't awfully wor ried." Other released guards agreed the inmates treated them well aft er herding them into rooms about 10:30 a.m. yesterday when two in mates pulled pieces of scissors on Guard Kenneth Berger and took over.
