n FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1957 HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON FAGB NINE Man Accepts Portland Post FORT ROCK Burton Brown, who has operated a land leveling and clearing business here t h e past two years, has accepted a job as shop foreman for the James G. Rouse Transportation firm in Portland. During 1956 Brown had three tractors and carryalls in operation for leveling. This season he ran two outfits. He came to Fort Rock in 1952 and did logging and lumber haul ing for the McGce sawmill. There were eight men on his payroll at that time. Brown then returned to leveling, the business started with his father, Owen Broun, in Red mond in 1947. Mrs. Brown, the former Kern Pitcher, has lived in Ford Rock Valley since 1947. They have two sons, Leslie, 2'i years old and iTiinmy who is 11 months. Leonard and Owen Pitcher will operate Brown's equipment here. Recreation Report Given MERRILL Faculties of both Merrill schools were honored at the annual Parent-Patron teach ers reception at the grade school Greeting guests as they entered the gymnasium decorated with fall flowers were Mrs. Clyde Fox and Mrs. Charles Cunningham of the hospitality committee. Program for the evening was presented by Mrs. Kathleen Ward ol Klamath Falls who showed a picturesque movie on India. Following the program, refresh ments were served by the execu tive committee headed by Mrs. James Lampkins, PPA president. Serving at the tea and coffee serv ices were the wives of the school board members: Mrs. Roy Beasly, Mrs. Robert Petrik and Mrs. Troy Quails. Incidental music was played throughout the refreshment hour by Mrs. Lawrence Geraghty. Corsages and boutonnieres made by Mrs. Jerry Ahem, Mrs. Dan Barry and Mrs. Walt Fothering ham were presented to each of the honored guests. Leslie, center, has a younger brother Timmy. Lumber Town Film To Be Mcde McCLOUD "I Live In a Lum ber Town" is the title of a film to be shot in the McCloud area soon. It will be produced by Avis Film, producer of "The World Around Us" series. Stephen Colombcro, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Colombero has been selected ns the McCloud youth to take the lead in the pic ture. Others in the cast have not been chosen yet. Norris Kwing of Burbank is the photographer and producer, and John Feracchino, elementary school vice principal, is consultant on the project. Favorable weather will signal starting of the production. Correspondence Study Set For High School Students In Panama a white orchid is called "(lor del espiritu santo" "flower of the holy spirit." Supervised correspondence study for academic credit is being made available to Oregon high school students for the first time this year. The Droeram was developed by the General Extension Division of the Oregon State System of Higher Education and will be adminis tered at the local level by offi cials of participating high schools. High school students in at least three caiejories are expected to benefit from the plan, according to Dr. Howard J. Akers, head of Mill's Safety Record Is High MOUNT SHASTA - The Ralph Smith Lumber Company, Mount Shasta Division, under manage ment of Robert Kohn has devel oped safety practices and equip ment to the point that the insur ance rate has been materially low ered. A safety council meets monthly, hears suggestions from workers, foremen or other interested per sons who have ideas about how to make working conditions less hazardous, and through these meetings have worked out an ap plied course of work that leaves little room for unavoidable acci dents. The Smith Company's accident rate is one of the best on the Pacific Coast. GED's Office of Correspondence Study. These are: 1. Gifted students capable of do ing work beyond the normal high school level of ditficulty. 2. Students who wish to take courses in subject areas not nor mally offered in high schools. 3. Students who wish to make up credits to meet graduation or other requirements. Under the new plan high school students may select correspond ence courses from the catalog of the General Extension Division, with the approval of the local school administrators. Cost of the courses will be one-half the regu lar cost of GED correspondence studies. The student will work out the course under the direction of a local supervisor who will correct the written work and assist the student in understanding the ma terial. lvxnminntions will be given un der the supervision of a local in structor and will be graded by the General Extension Division. SCHOOL CLOSES McCLOUD The Pondosa Ele mentary School has closed due to 17 of the 36 pupils being ill with the flu and colds. James Hogm, prin cipal of the McCloud elementary district, stated a check would be made Wednesday to determine whether a sufficient number of the students are able to attend classes to warrant reopening the school. Grades for courses satisfactorily completed will be determined on the basis of recommendations from the local teacher and examination grades. High school students, school ad ministrators, or school board members may obtain information on the new program from the Of fice of Correspondence Study, Gen eral Extension Division, Eugene. The speaker was Allen Baker, who conducted a question and answer talk on shrubs for this country. Refreshments were served by Ilie hostess, Pearl Harsey, assisted by Pauline Christen. A short busi ness meeting was held. It was announced that the National Coun cil of State Garden Clubs will hold their 29th annual meeting in Seat tle, next May and that the state convention will be held in Eugene next spring.
