RALPH DALZEIX When basement areas are being remodeled to create recreation rooms or other living or working areas the usual procedure is to apply furring strips to the founda tion surfaces and then to fasten decorative insulation panels, planks or blocks to the strips. What to do about trim work around win- TRW AROUND TYPICAL BASEMENT WINDOW AFTER; INSTALLATION OF FURRING AND SURFACE MATERIAL FOUNDATION B "INDOW CASING BSASH I CASING dows poses a problem for most homeowners, but the illustration and explanation here will help home craftsmen. Most basement windows are hinged, usually, and surrounded by a casing (3 in the picture). When furring strips and surface material are applied to the foundation spe cial trimming, as indicated in the picture, must be built in to give the work a finished appearance. The sash (2) and casing (3) are typical. Some basement windows may be slightly different but the following suggestions apply to all. Apply the furring strips so-their vertical center lines are 16 inches apart to get the best use of sur facing material. On both sides of the window opening vertical strips '5) should be flush with the sur face of the foundation. This is also true of the horizontal strips (6). The space (9) between the out er edge of the furing strips 5 and 6 and the inner edge of the casing may vary for different win dows and foundation thicknesses. However, the space can be trimmed with fillers (4) as re quired. One or two pieces can fill space 9. The exterior edge (10) of FOUnSv . After the surface material and the fillers (4) have been placed trim pieces 17) can be nailed into place to complete the trimming. The trim pieces can overlap the filler pieces slightly, as shown at 10. If the basement area being re modeled is likely to be damp aft er hard rains, apply a liberal coat of asphaltum to the surface of the foundation before applying the sur face material. Steward an nounced this week. The Oregon Cattlemen's Associ ation filed the petition asking for hearings and referendum on the commission in July. The scheduled hearings will help department offi cials determine whether there is need for a self-help program for the Oregon beef industry. If the department decides in favor of the petitioners, the proposed commis sion must still be approved by a producer vote. The commission proposal affects all who are producing beef for market, including those who sell dairy cattle for meat. If the commission should be cre ated, producers could be assessed up to 10 cents per animal on all sales for slaughter or for shipment out of the state. These funds would be restricted to use on solving problems associated with market ing of beef. The petition also places other limitations upon the beef commission. Director Steward said he hopes all interested persons will attend at least one of the hearings: The complete schedule of hear ings follows, all but two of which will be at 1:30 o'clock: October 15 Portland, State Of fice Building, hearing Koom 36; October 16 Tillamook, courthouse, i circuit courtroom; October 1 ( Coquille, county extension office, i courthouse; October 18 Gold Hill, t grange hall; October 18 Roseburg. courthouse auditorium, 7:30 p.m.; October 19 Eugene, county exten sion office, 1170 Pearl Street; Oc tober 21 Klamath Falls, f a i r grounds lecture room ; October 22 Lnkevicw, courthouse; October 23 Burns, courthouse. 'Furthermore, all pen lot bulls will be housed in the same barns," he said, "so that range bull buy ers can easily see our entire offer ing. "What we wish to do," Smith added, "is to develop a strong pen lot sale as far as range bulls are concerned and to ultimately limit our individuals to strong; clean pedigreed herd bull pros pects and top range bulls. "We feel that this will prove a healthy move for the sale, es pecially if we continue to urge consignors to bring their loose pen range bulls in just 'good' range condition, which many range bulls buyers prefer. "Someday we expect to sell sev eral hundred range bulls in loose pen lots ranging from two to ten head each, together with a limited number of excellent individuals at Red Bluff. "The past 17 Red Bluff Bull Sales have demonstrated that Red bluff is probably the biggest bull market m the west, as far as numbers of bulls and quality is concerned.
