M-Up un til yesterday, little Francis X., pathetically ill with muscular dys trophy, had never had a visitor at the Lakeville State Sanatorium. His mother ii dead and his fa ther is in prison for killing her. The youngster, also known as Little Boy Blue, thought nobody wanted him. Facing a lonely birthday, he lold Dr. Kurt Jcllinek last week he didn't want much, maybe four or five cards. The story of the lonely young ster got out and it touched the heart of the nation. On his ninth birthday yesterday he learned how many friends he really has. Comedian Jerry Lewis dedicat ed a million-dollar television show exclusively to the ailing young ster. More than 150,000 cards and letters were mailed to him and they were still coming today. . An estimated $10,000 was mailed to him. Offers of help jammed the hos pital switchboard. Toys, candy, games. ' radios, television sets and other gifts were delivered to the hospital by the truckload. Little Francis could hardly con tain himself when Jerry Lewis appeared on the television screen in the closed-circuit telecast and dedicated an all star show to ".My one-boy audience." Performers included Tennessee Ernie Ford; Eddie Fisher; Eddie Cantor; Hugh O'Brien, TV's Wy att Earp; Jim Arness, the Mar shal Dillon of the Gunsmokc TV show; the Mouscketecrs of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse show, the Skylarks singing group and an 18-piece orchestra. Jerry Lewis, who is the nation al chairman of the Muscular Dys trophy Assn. of America, ar ranged the private show with Gen, David Sarnoff, board chairman of the Radio Corp. of America. Although he doesn't have much strength, Francis managed to blow out the candles on his birth day cake and to open a few of the hundreds of presents he re ceived. The youngster shared his birth-l day and the presents with an esti mated 75 other hospitalized chil dren, some of them wearing casts from the neck down. Little Francis, whose name was withheld by the hospital, request ed that many of his gilts be dis tributed to the other children. The money he received will be placed in a trust fund tor him. More important than anything else to the boy was the comment of Dr. Jellinek that "this has done wonders for the boy. A week ago he wouldn't respond and now he has a will to live." Haggerty. general chairman of' the 1957 Ore gon Tax Conference, which will be held in Eugene, October 25 and 26. Many tax-minded businessmen and their professional tax advis ers from Klamath Falls will be in attendance at the event sponsored by the Oregon Association of Pub lic Accountants, Haggerty reports. "Special attention will be de voted to the tax problems of small businesses and agriculture," Hag gerty promised. He reported that eight outstand ing tax authorities from Oregon, Washington and California will ad dress the conference and will then participate in an all-speakers pan el discussion which will answer the "bread-and-butter" questions presented by those attending. Appearing on the program, in addition to the tax experts, will be Sen. Richard L. Neuberger, who will discuss "Economic Crisis in Oregon."
