Coach Ara Giles Predicts Brooklyn Shift NEW YORK (UP) President Warren Giles of the National League confirmed today that he believes the Dodgers will leave New York, but denied that he said the league will have a replace ment for them in New York in 1958. "I guess what I meant to say was that there will be a National League club in New York eventu ally," he said. "I do not believe there will be a National League club in New York in 1958." Two experienced sports report ers said Giles, in New York for the World Series, told thein that he was convinced the Dodgers would be in Los Angeles in 1958, but that he also was sure that his league would still be represented in New York. Ohio State's 38-man traveling squad leaves this morning for its Saturday date with the Washing ton Huskies in Seattle. Coach Woody Hayes sent the squad through a two-hour practice ses sion in which first string center Danny James suffered an injured ankle. The injury wasn't consid ered serious, however. Michigan's football team under went its first contact of the week Wednesday, scrimmaging against reserves using Georgia offensive and defensive formations. The squad worked briefly on pass defense and signal drills Wednes day and Coach Duffy Daugherty named 14 seniors. 11 juniors and 18 sophomores to the traveling squad. Notre Dame went through a live ly scrimmage and a rugged ses sion on pass defense drills, but Coach Terry Brennan said there would be no more heavy worn this week before the Indiana game Saturday. to come to Los Angeles and talk over the deal before next Mon day's showdown vote in the coun cil. Poulson made the announce ment after talking Wednesday with Councilmen Patrick D. Mc Gee and Earle D. Baker. They said their objections to the trans action might be withdrawn if O'Malley or one of his aides came hero to clear up several points in a talk with the council ' Poulson said he felt O'Malley would have no reluctance about coming for such a talk himself or senaing a niemoer oi nis siau. There is nothing to hide about this deal," the mayor said. At next Monday s meeting, the council will 'hear final reading of the proposed transfer ordinance and then vote (on it. Affirmative votes are needed from two-thirds of the 15-member council for passage of the ordinance. Most of the opposition to the deal has centered around the real estate exchange that would be in volved. The Dodgers would give the city their minor league ball park here in partial payment for city-owned land that would be used as a site tor a new ballpark; Cards Interested In Robin Roberts NEW YORK (UP) Frank Lane said today the Cardinals are "def initely interested" in obtaining Robin Roberts but there were in dications St. Louis might have to outbid the National League cham pion Milwaukee Braves. Lane refused to commit himself on which players he might offer the Phillies, but the Braves appar ently are ready to give up a pitcher plus infielder Felix Man tilla and catcher Carl Sawatski if they can swing the deal. "I still consider Roberts mighty fine pitcher even though he lost 22 games this year," Lane said. "He's tiie kind of competi tor who could come right back and win 15 or 18 next season." Roy Harney, general manager of the Phillies, also thinks along Lane's lines in that respect' and thus far has shown no indication he is ready to peddle the 31-y.ir- old right handcr. who won 20 or more games every season from 1950 through 1955. The Phillies, however, are known to be in the market for right-handed power hitters and the Cards might be induced to part with Ken Boyer. LEGAL NOTICE Food Poisoning Hits Cup Golfers WORKSOP, England (UP) Three U.S. Ryder Cup golfers, in cluding 1957 Open champion Dick Mayer were in bed with food poi soning and Asian flu today but doctors said they would be able to play in Friday's opening matches. British doctors said Fred Haw kins and Dow Finsteiwald were suffering from food poisoning and that Mayer had Asian flu, The three were confined to their beds at the team's hotel. Doctors examined them Wednesday night and assured Jackie Burke. U.S. team captain, that all would be ready to play against Britain's professional stars when play starts they knocked the ace Brave lefty out of the box in the sixth inning. But he couldn t have been any tougher than the guy who pitched batting practice to the Yanks Sal Maglie, a Yankee since Sept. 1 but ineligible for the series. Sal beat the Yacks in the open ing game of the series for the Dodgers last year, but he was the only member of the 1956 Brook lyn team that even gol to suit up Wednesday. Stengel apparently forgot it though. Shouldering a couple of reporters aside so he could see the batting cage, the Yank skipper said, "I gotta see Brooklyn hit." The Braves praised Whitey Ford to the hilt they said he pitched like a National Leaguer. Adcock. who went 0-4, said: "You know who he reminded me of? Preach er Roe, that's who. He was de liberate. Determined and delibe rate. He works on you; gives you nothing good to hit at all. Hank Bauer's RBI double in the fifth inning extended his series hitting streak to eight straight games. He hit in all seven of the 1956 contests. The record of 13 straight games is held jointly by Frank Schulte of the Chicago Cubs and Harry Hooper, Boston Red Sox, 1915-18. Mickey Mantle's two hits four tries increased his series' batting average 10 points to .271, The Yankees' star has 26 hits in 96 at bats 15 singles, two dou bles, one triple and eight homers. Jerry Coleman's second inning double was his first series h 1 1 since 1951. He played in the 1955 and 1956 classics but did not have a safe blow. Whitey Ford's victory put him within two of the series' record. Red Ruffing and Allie Reynolds of the Yankees each won seven. Whitey's a good bet to break the mark since he's only 28 years old. Ford also reduced his series' earned run average to a smart 2.62. The lefthander has yielded only 16 earned runs in 54 2-3 in nings while walking 17 batters and striking out 37. City Football Program Set The city grade school football squads will stage their annual foot ball jamboree beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Modoc Field. City Athletic Director Joe Peak adds that the jamboree marks the opening of the football scson with in the elementary schools, and that approximately 200 boys will see action during the multi-team event. The five teams and their coaches are: Conger-Riverside, coached by William Johnston and Tom Ward; Fairview, coached by Sam Red- key and William Hamilton; Mills coached by John Ginther and Jim Young; Pelican-Roosevelt, coached by Rod Groslong and Eldridge An derson and the Junior High Midg ets coached by Ed Myers. The evening play will consist ot five short games, and the varsity and junior varsity squads of each club will take part. Each team will have two six-minute periods, and the junior high midgets will play each of the grade teams one quarter. Peak adds that proceeds from the jamboree will be used for helping to finance the schools' ath letic programs.
