A 21-gun salute boomed across the harbor in a salute to the pale green lady who has held aloft a welcoming beacon at the gateway to America since 1886. The birthday party also saw the home of the statue officially changed from Bedloe's Island to Liberty Island. Secretary 'of Interior Frank Seaton praised the lady of free-' dom in ceremonies at her feet.i The program launched a national; campaign for five million dollars, to build a museum of immigra tion on the island. I Vernon School Bids Heard LAKEV1EW - Three bids were received by Lake County School District No. 41, Lakeview, at the bid opening Friday afternoon for a two-classroom addition to Ver non Elementary School, five miles west of Lakeview. Because a quorum was lacking. official action was not taken Fri day. Another meeting has been called for this week to consider the bids. Bidders - and amounts of bids were: Mann Construction Com pany. Redmond, $30,800: Lakeview Building Materials Company, Lake- view, $31,150, and A. E. Fitzgerald, Klamath Falls, $34,649. Hawk Rites Tuesday LAKEVIEW Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, from the Elks Lodge, with the Rev. C Wayne Julier officiating, for Leon ard Earl Hawk, 49, who died at his West Side home on Satur day. He had been ill for about a year. Born at Crawfordville, Oregon, he lived at Falls City in Polk County prior to coming to Lake County. He was a logger, rancher and at one time a forest service employe. For the last 13 years he had been ranching on the Dry Creek section of Goose Lake Val ley. Survivors include the widow, Virginia Ellen Hawk of Lakeview; two sons, Ronald Hawk, a. stu dent at Oregon State College and James who attend Lakeview High School: his father, William Hawk of Portland: three sisters, Mrs. Violette Leih of Willow Ranch, Mrs. Ray Roberts of Portland and Mrs. Juanita Schuler of Salem. He was a member of the Dry Creek school board and of the Elks Lodge. Pallbearers will be Clyde Fe'ni more, George Fenimore, Cash Ry chard. Vale Cannon, Raymond Johnson and Ed Strieby. Langslet moved ahead to November 12 and 13 the date for the meeting of the tax com mittee of the Association of Ore gon Counties. The meeting was' originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, at Lakeview, but the first snow storm of the winter made some of the members in the western section of the state decide against the trip at this time. .
