pear on the November 6 general
election ballot, if approved by the
people, would amend Oregon's
constitution and give the Legisla
ture the power to prescribe the
qualifications of county coroners
and surveyors. , -

amendment point out that as the
constitution now stands it is impos

ifications for professional ability
in either of the county posts.
Proponents of the amendment
state that passage of the meas
ure would allow the Legislature to
fix the qualifications for both of
fices so that better qualified indi
viduals would hold these county
jobs. They also state that under
the purely elective process, and
in the absence of minimum quali
fications set by the Legislature
this is not always the result.

the county ballot, thus permitting
the voters to concentrate more in-

state that the proposal is an at
tempt by small pressure groups
to deny electors their constitutional
right to elect county officials. They
have pointed out that there Is no
popular demand for this change.
