The bomb was dropped from a four-jet Valiant bomber flying about three miles high over the Maralinga test range in southern Australia. It was the third in Britain's current series of four test blasts, but the first to be de scribed as an actual . weapon ready for use tin event of war. The air drop was generally con sidered a dress rehearsal for Brit ain's first hydrogen bomb test on Christmas Island next spring. Air force officials who will take part in that operation watched today's blast. - A huge fireball - dimmed the afternoon sun as the bomb went off. A smoke cloud spread in all directions in patterns somewhat different from the usual mush room formation which follows ground bursts. A report from the blast scene said scientists already were mov ing into the area to check condi tions. A fleet of Royal Air Force Canberra bombers were tracing the atomic cloud.
