OREGON MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1958 Tight Money May Be Cause Of Auto Buying Cost Gain NEW YORK UF Rising costs of buying autos and appliances on time and difficulty In getting cash from the small loan companies are seen today as the next impact of tight money on consumers. The firms that finance your auto Durchase first borrow that money before they, in effect, lend it to you by handling instalment Dust ness for the auto dealers. Interest charges on the funds they borrow are going up and the b e auto finance companies say It their business is to remain profit able the wholesale finance charges they assess the dealers must go up, too. Auto dealers, in turn, will be less inclined to shave much off the prices suggested by the auto makers. In short, your car is likely to cost more because money is tight. Small loan companies who lend you money to meet bills or to buy from the stores also borrow much of that money first. It's costing them more and some of the small er firms find it hard to get any money at all. In many slates there is a legal limit to how much interest they can charge. There- fore, the small loan people are crying the bluet. They say their costs are soaring and their profits shrinking. They are shunting aside their expan sion plans and some of the smaller ones are closing their doors. "More independent loan offices have been offered us for sale than at any time in the past 30 years," says. Lyle S. Woodcock, vice pres ident of the Liberty Loan Corp.,! St. Louis. "In nearly every case it was the same story: tight mon ey and high interest rates." The big boys are hurting, too. William T. Christian, vice presi dent of the Household Finance Corp., Chicago and president of the National Consumer Finance Assn., opening its annual meeting in Miami Beach, Fla., tomorrow says: "Since we borrow substan tial amounts from commercial banks on short term loans, our expenses of doing business have increased proportionately." Shortage of funds may limit the volume of consumer credit, says William B. Paul Jr., president of the Family Finance Corp., Wilm- ington, Del. While A. M. Con- stans, president of State Loans, Bellevue. wash., sees nigner in terest charges curtailing both the incentive and the ability of small loan companies to cope with the growth in consumer credit de mands. And Wilbur A. Bean, board chairman of Equitable Cred it Corp., Albany, N.Y., predicts tight money through all of next year and perhaps into 1958.
