The economic disaster that fastened itself upon our farm fam ilies left President Eisenhower un shaken in his determination to keep his back turned against his own campaign promises, he said On an 11,600 mile campaign tour that started Sept. 14, Ke fauver is to gp on 10 Jamestown, N. D. tonight and then strike out through several other Middle Western slates. In his latest bid for the farm vote, Kefauver renewed his charges that Eisenhower had broken his 1932 campaign pro mises to the farmers and fired fresh volleys at Secretary of Agri culture Benson and Vice President Nixon. ' "For many farmers," he said, "the natural disaster of drought came to afflict them, along with the unnatural disaster of Ezra Taft Benson. And the millionaire dominated Eisenhower administration raised the interest rate on disaster loans to these farmers from 3 per cent tp 5 per cent,." ; 1 Aa for Nixon, Kefauver said the vice president during his 10 years in the House and Senate "voted consistently against farm price support, soil conservation, REA and other legislation to help agriculture." Kefauver headed back to the Dakotas, which he touched briefly three days campaigning in Oregon and Washington close on the heels of Nixon. In an interview at Longview, Wash., yesterday, he said a speech Nixon made at Colorado Springs was reminiscent of the 1928 cam paign promise he attributed to former President Hoover. Kefauver was referring to a speech in which Nixon spoke of our goals , for the future and said, among other things, that "we could promise two automobiles. three television sets, a better house and a dozen other comforts that could mean so much to every American." Kefauver said, "This two auto mobiles and three TV sets sounds like a modern day version of Her bert Hoover's promise of 28 years ago of two cars in every garage and a chicken in every pot." 1 don't think Mr. Nixon and the present administration are any more capable ol delivering than Mr. Hoover was," he said. "The parallel. I believe, will frighten a good many Americans." Ike Reports On Asian Aid Funds By WARREN" ROGER JR. WASHINGTON til President Eisenhower told Congress today the Far East got almost half of the 14 billion dollars obligated in non military U.S. foreign aid during fiscal 19d. The President's report on the last halt ot that year which ended June 30 left no doubt of the pro gram's essential emphasis on de fense against .communism. In his letter of transmittal to congress, Eisenhower wrote: "The accomplishments during this six-month period under this program of mutual effort have further advanced the security, the economic progress and the well- being of the United States and our partners in the free world. The report also noted: 1. Of the 7604 million dollars obligated for Far East nonmili- tary aid during fiscal I9a6, 726H million was for "defense support." That's a phrase to cover the aid the United States gives a country to replace funds that country uses to -build up its national defense. Most of It went to South Korea, Nationalist China and South Viet Nam. 2. All of the 110 millions sent Europe for nonmilitary aid in fis cal 1936 went for defense support. 3. The biggest share of the near ly 2i billions' set aside for the whole mutual security program during fiscal 1956 went for direct military aid and defense support, Of the total, 643 millions was ob ligated or reserved by the Penta gon for direct military assistance. - 4. During January-June 1936, the United States shipped nearly two billion dollars In military goods to the free world. Two thirds of it went to Europe. Half the value of the total was made up of planes and related air force items. Woman Escapes Murder Charge BEND i1 Mrs. Jennie Bonita Balzhiser, accused of -second de gree murder in the June 20- death of her husband, Bobby, was ac quitted by a circuit court, jury here Saturday night. . The jury deliberated five hours, Mrs. Balzhiser testified that she shot blindly through a window of her home, not knowing that it was her estranged husband outside.
