FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1956 HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON PAGE THREE Eisenhower Tours lova Farm Belt; Adlai Attacks By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS President Eisenhower ac- cused by Adlai Stevenson of giv ing "only half the facts" on world peace set out today to convince the nation's farmers that "we're doing everything we can for them." Eisenhower was billed to make two brief speeches in Iowa one to farmers attending the National Field Days near Newton, and a second at the Des Moines airport before he flies back to Washing ton. Next Tuesday, he will make major farm speech at Peoria, Stevenson, the Democratic pres idential candidate, will take his speaking turn at the Newton farm gathering tomorrow at the outset nf an U-siate tour. REBUTTAL FIRED Last nieht. Stevenson fired a rp. buttal to some of the things Eisen hower said in a nationwide TV radio campaign address Wednes day nighl. Although applauding Eisenhow er's expression of "this country's passion or peace." Stevenson was critical of the President's refer ences to "the free nation of Viet Nam'' and to Formosa as having been "previously written off." Speaking before a cheering rally In Silver Spring, Md., just outside Washington, he said that in men tioning Viet Nam Eisenhower "left out the fact that half of that nqtion, more than 10 million peo ple, has been lost to the Commu nists." Furthermore, he said Eisenhow er "must have forgotten that it was President Truman who sent the 7th Fleet to defend Formosa," the Chinese Nationalist island. In a Montana-wide radio speech from Missoula last night. Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, the Democratic vice-presidential nom inee said Vice President Nixon came up wth a "whopper" Wednesday in claiming that the Eisenhower administration's ' partnership" policy was the best! to accomplish development of power resources. j NO KILOWATTS I "The truth is." said Kefauver.! "that not one single kilowatt-hour i of electricity has been produced under the Eisenhower partnership policy." Nixon, speaking in Spokane, Wash., last night accused Kefauv er of "below the belt, low-road tactics." The vice president was aroused by Kefauver's statement two days ago that Eisenhower "has person ally been working just as hard against the little people of this nation as those who surrounded him." Nixon called this Kefauver state ment a "thinly veiled attempt to give the impression that the Pres ident ... is deliberately working! against a large segment of our population." Republican leaders were heart ened by the enthusiastic reception Eisenhower got yesterday when he drove from Des Moines to Boone, the birthplace of Mrs. Eisenhower. The Eisenhowers stayed overnight at Boone before heading for the field day site in Newton. The big crowds that turned out to wave and shout greetings di minished concern among some GOP politicians over a possible farm revolt in the politically im portant Farm Belt. In other developments: I Republican National Chairman Leonard W. Hall told the National Republican Club in New York that I Eisenhower must have a GOP ! controlled Congress "so he can follow through on his program of accomplishment." Hall said the 84th Congress, which had Demo cratic majorities in both houses, "obstructed and delayed many portions" of Eisenhower's pro gram. Secretary of Labor Mitchell said in a talk before the National Press Club in Washington that the Dem ocratic chairmen of the Senate 'and House labor committees blocked hearings even on "some of the relatively noncontroversial" labor proposals by Eisenhower. Of Stevenson, Mitchell said "the people of the country know the Democratic candidate is promis ing what Eisenhower has already done" for labor. MANAGER DIES SANTA BARBARA. Calif.
