PAGE TWO Diane West Wins Ribbon Diane West of Merrill came away from the Oregon State Fair at Salem with a blue ribbon which she won in the junior dollar din ner contest. Her meal had to be prepared under the eyes of the judges and the rules required that she be ready to serve within four hours from the time she en' tered the booth.' Lee Scoville of Lakevlew also took a blue ribbon. Red ribbon winners in a jelly making contest were Donna and Helen Odegaard of Lakcvicw, They won by blending honey, wa ter and pectin together to make a non sticky jelly. ' A Single Quart? PHIICO 6610 America" Q TELEVISION ' i:X fit x MERIT Hatchery Bids Given MOUNT SHASTA Bingham Construction Company of Sacra mento was awarded the contract for improvements arid additions to the California Fish Hatchery in .Mount Shasta. Amount of the bid was (48,000. Improvements are expected to be completed by late fall or early spring. Eight brood stock ponds and adjoining sorting and spawn ing houses will complete and round out the pond systems al lowing egg production to be in creased. The hatchery, which has been in operation since 1888, hatches more than eight million eggs an nually, about half of which are shipped to other California hatch eries. It raises more than four million rainbow trout fingerlings, the greatest number raised by any California hatchery. Three mil lion salmon fingerlings were hatched here and released in the Klamath River last year. In addi tion, more than 400.000 legal size rainbow trout were raised here. Work on the project commenced this week with hopes of continuing good weather which would allow the work to be completed by early winter. Fire Wipes Out Jap City Center UOZU, Japan i More than 1.750 homes were destroyed today by a fire that virtually wiped out the center of this city of 47,000 persons 150 miles west of Tokyo. A typhoon wind of 30 m.p.h. fanned the flames. Police said 1 person was killed, 22 were missing and 55 were in jured. Firemen fought the blaze six hours before bringing it under control. More than 8,000 persons were left homeless. Authorities esti mated damages at $4,150,000.
