PAY LESS AT THE ARMY STORE 320 So. 6th Ph. 9206 SU Looks For Boss; Hec Drops SEATTLE HI Clarence S (Keel Edmuadson withdrew troni consideration s basketball coach t Seattle University Thursday but other names were dropped into th" hopper as the school continued a search lor a successor to Ai Brightman. Tne rumor market quickly of fered such caoices as Bill Borcher of the University of Oregon, titeve Bilko of Idaho Slate College and Bill Marx, freshman coach at thf University of Washington. Brightman whose chieftains competed iu the NCAA resonate at Corvallis, Ore., last, weekend resigned Tuesday in a surprise move alter eight successful vears at Seattle U. Brightman and other SU offi cials were due at Chicagu Thurs day hoping to land a "big name' at the national coaches conven tion and the tx-coach was expect ed to have a hand in selecting his own replacement. But Edmundson,- who turned out' Pacitic Coast commence cham pionship teams ui years at uie University of Washington, said his name should come on the list. Now 67 and officially retired, Edmundson advised tile school to "look for a young fellow who will attract good players and who will be intensively active as a coach." The Post-Intelligencer said the Rev. Fr. Robert Rebhahn, S.J., the Chieftains' athletic director who accompanied Brightman to Chicago, was expected to inter view Belko and Borcher Thursday or Friday. The newspaper said both Bilko and Borcher expressed interest in tht job In telephone interviews. Borcher was quoted that he was "flattered" at being mentioned but had talked to none In authority and would not do so until he had a clearance from the University of Oregon, Belko called the Job a "wonder ful opportunity for any conch," the P-I said. For the kid from Oklahoma, thcrq can 6e slight question but what success cumc too easily. It is equally undebatable that he hasn't earned it, to date. Which is why they are saying that 1956 is the year of decision for the commercial clouter from Com merce. Mickey was only 19 when, in 1950 he took the gigantic leap from Jop lin in the Class C Western League all the way up to the Yankees. Immediately he was hailed as "the new Joe DiMaggio." . Before you take this as a knock, letS face the fact that Mantle was the American League home run champion in 1955 with 37 shots out of the park. But this is not exactly hoeric. Admit, too, that Willie Mays of the Giants won the Na tional League title with 51. Going along with those statistics are the Mays' batting averages of .345 to win the NL title in 1954 and his "lowly" .319 of last season against Mantle's all-time best of .311 in 1952 and .306 of last season. The answer, as admitted around Mantle's own club, is that master Mickey is home run crazy. He is, like a lot of others, influenced by Ralph Killer's remark that "home run hitters ride hi Cadillacs and The Rugged Dependable Phone 5115 f 1 t " rural ii V.., TSEESaV-; This Year high average hitters r i d e in Fords." To be sure, ' Mantle has deliv ered some mammoth belts. One of the worst things that could have happened to him was that tape measured 565-foot clout at Wash ington in 1953 and if you are look ing for mental indications he is reported out of the spring training camps to be most proud these days of a 450-foot blast delivered in an exhibition game against the Car dinal. This. It would seem. Is not the mental mechanics of a young fel low determined to change his ways or his batting average. Mnybe you can come Up with someone who is fleeter of foot than Uie Oklahoma Antelope, but I can't. Steaming down to first, he goes quicker than the rent money on opening day at Belmont Park. This kid can really tep it. Which long has caused Manager Casey Stengel to observe that Mantle, if he so desired, could add a cool 20 points at least to his batting average bv applying him self to the business of getting on base. But apparently Mantle has his mind set on being a great home run hitter. As such, he is a free swinger and, like all such, he must take more than the accepted num ber of strikeouts. When that hap pens he frets himself right into a vacuum. . NASH Eves. 6112 r1 .: 2 -a i 'jo o(3 Mel Asbury Keep! s Lead In Mobil Run GRAND JUNOTJON. Calo.
