But because of the high rating the TV show won last year the old-time Academy Awards ceremony of years back has bren streamlined to the bone to make it a faM-paced TV program. If An all white Circuit Court jury convicted two Negro brothers of beating rniversiiy of Alabama atudent but spared them a heavy prison sen tence. Arthur Washington. 23. and John Washington, 19, were fined S&00 yesterday and sentenced to six months in jail for attacking a 19-vear-oid freshman in anger over hiob action against Autherine Lucy, a Negro coed later expelled from the university. The brothers were Indicted for assault with Intent to murder. which carries a sentence of 2 to M vears on conviction. The Jury faund the Washington! guilty of a lesser charge of assault and bat tery, a misdemeanor. They did cot appeal. Samuel Perrin Taylor, the white student, testified that he was at tacked by ihe brothers without cause the night of Feb. 14. eight days after Miss Lucy was driven from the campus. Defense attorney William Allen said that "the main provocation was the tenseness of the situation here at the university and at Tus caloosa at that time. There was no malice toward Taylor.
