Another Portland entry, Lincoln raptured third place by tipping Marshfield. 12-57. Eugene, the de. ending state champion, downed Jefferson of Portland. 78-76, to win fourth place. Milton - Freewater finished fifth by beating Pendleton, 55-49. Franklin had been rated No. 2 in the Associated Press prep poll. Eugene was No. 1, Jefferson No. 3, Medford No. 4 and Milton-Freewater No. 5. Marshfield was No. 6 and Lincoln was unranked In the final poll's top ten. A turnout of 9.581 thinned somewhat by the competing NCAA playoffs in Corvallis watched Franklin's big center, 6-9 BJarne Teams Win First, Hoop Tournament Jensen, assure his team victory over tough Medford. Jensen scored 27 poin-s and snared a batch of rebounds. It was the second straight time Medford bad lost out in the cham pionship game, and also the second straight time a good big man turned the tnck. Last year Eugene defeated Medford in the finals, 72-56. with Eugene's 6-8 Mike Moran the big scorer. Jensen's performance reminded many tournament observers of Wade Halbrook. another big man who in 1951 set the four-game tournament scoring record of 166 points and the single-game mark of 51. Jensen's scoring didn't match this, although his rebound ing and team play were equal to the 6-foot-plus Halbrook. Jensen scored 96 points In four games, a 24-point average. The Brooklyn Dodgers polished off the Chicago White Sox 4-1 with Roy Campanella hitting his first home run of the spring. Pittsburgh's two-man pitching staff. Bob Friend and Dick Little field, came up with a rare ac complishment while the Pirates were blasting the St. Louis Cardi nals 7-2 at St. Petersburg. They combined to hold Stan Musial hit-less. Frank Sullivan, Bob Porter- field and Leo Kiely of Boston also turned in a slick pitching per formance, blanking the Philadel- Dhia Phillies 9-0 at Sarasota. The Washington Senators beat the Kansas City A's 7-5 in Or lando. The Chicago Cubs turned back the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 at Scottsdale, Ariz., when Walt Mo rynbroke a 3-all tie with a three run homer in the eighth Inning At Lakeland, the Detroit Tigers won their second exhibition game of the season by crushing the Mil waukee Braves, also 6-3. Mel Krause, tht Franklin coach who plays baseball with the Salem Senators in the Northwest League in the summer season. Krause said the guards came through better than at any time in the season. He credited his whole team with the victory and said it wasn't a one-inan Job. Tournament attendance fell hort of record figures, although 74.961 witnessed the five-day event. Two scoring records were set in the title game. Franklin's 73 toiius lopped the team total of 72, set last year by Eugene, and the game score of 133 was live more than the 128 of 1955. Medford gave Franklin a deter mined battle all the way. and held leads of 9-5 and 18-71 before Franklin moved ahead to stay, 19-18. The champion Quakers spurted early In the second half and piled up a commanding lead. Reserves saw action late in the game. Franklin hit 24 field goals in 62 attempts for a .387 shooting aver age. Medford shot a respectable .304 in a losing effort, with 21 out of 69 attempts. Lincoln's third-place victory over beefy Marshfield was a mild sur prise, after the Coos Bay team had ran rougnsnod over Jefferson. Lincoln guard George Miler sank 23 points to set the pace for the Cardinals. Eleven of the 24 came on free throws out of 14 attempts, Marshfield climbed to within a few points several times but Lin coln kept Its lead throughout the game. The halfime score was 37-32. Eugene's Axemen, a disappoint ment to some supporters, were pressed to the limit before nosing out Jefferson of Portland, 78-76, in the game for fourth place. Chuck Rask, Jeiterson s ail-star guard, scored 27 points in a one- man ellort alter the porllanders lost their only effective tall man, 6-4 Jerry Anderson. The contest Is to see which make of car uses the least gaso line to negotiate the 1.468.8 miles from here to Colorado Springs, Colo. Three thousand motoring tans braved the late hours and down town traffic to see the cavalcade off. The contestants,, starting at two-minute Intervals, headed lor the first day's stop at Las Vegas, New,, via Death Valley. Tuesday they will make Sal'. Lake City. Wednesday . Grand Junction, Colo., and Thursday Col orado Srpings. In addition to the drivers, each car carries two observers. The cars must average 40.8 m.p.h. to complete the run within the run ning time limit of 36 hours. Prizes will be awarded winning cars in various price ranges. Grow will be opposed in' this northwest lightweight title match by Ronnie Sanchez, 135 pounder from Denver, Colorado. Sanchez is the former light weight champion of the U.S. Air Force. He has fought 14 professional bouts, winning 10. Grow has won 42 of his 53 pro fights, 25 by knockouts, and has been kayoed five times himself. The fights begin at 8:30 Saturday with tickets now on sale at Dick Reeder's store. Lillard said there will be four other bouts on the card that night.
