Thief Attempts To Swindle Fence; Lands In Old Bailey
IXNDON UH When i Jewel
thief turns into con man Uying
to swindle a fence who is in fact a
policeman, some confusion may en
sue even In the Old Bailey Police
Court.
The Judge has decided to take
a Utile time to sort things out.
Meanwhile. 35-year-old Henry Gar
ratt, the con man. Is nibbling bis
nails and hoping for the best.
A police Informer advised de
tectives in suburban Harrow re
cently that Garratt had a batch of
hot diamonds he planned to ped
aii to a receiver of stolen prop
erty. The meeting, the Informer said,
would take place in a certain sa
loon, and Garratt would know
the fence only from his descrip
tion as a man in a brown coal
and corduroy cap.
On the appointed night, the de
tectives got there first. One o
their number. Constable Jeffrey
Lyons, was dressed to play the
part of the fence, and was ap
proached by Garratt.
Lyons testified Garratt flashed
four rings and described them as
stolen goods worth at least 1.000
pounds $2.300. Garratt offered
the supposed fence a bargain price
of 300 pounds ($840i for the four.
At this point Detective Sgt. Amos
Gibson stepped up, tapped Gar
ratt on the shoulder, and arrested

him on ft charge of being In pos
session of stolen jewelry.
"Hah, Han," laughed Garratt.
"The stones are phony and 1
didn't steal, them. I bought them
for 4 pounds '$11 201 and I've got
the receipt to prove It."
"Hah. hab. yourself," retorted
Gibson. "In that case the charge
is attempting to obtain money by
false pielensts."
And on that charge Garratt was
convicted in the Old Bailey.
The Judge, postponing sentence,
said he heard some strange tales
from the bench but nothing to
match this one, at least not re
cently. Indicating that be might temper
I justice with mercy, In spue of "This defendant was trying to
Garrett's five previous (convictions I swindle a fence, and if he had
for similar capers, the judge! succeeded he might have taught
mused: the fence a sharp lesson."

Of all benefits paid by Equitable last year,
over 70 went to Living policyholders
An important message from a pioneer
of Living Insurance
Once you've said something, it's always good to be able
to prove it.
Equitable has long held that the function of Living
lnstirance is to stress benefits for you and your family
while you live as well as for those who live on after you.
The proof of this dynamic concept is shown by the
figures for 1955. During that year, Equitable disbursed
5597,000,000 in benefits. But of greater importance to
you is the fact that over 70 of that amount or
$422,000,000-went to icing policyholders, people who
didn't have to die to win. And today they lead richer
lives as a result of the funds that Equitable provided
for family and retirement Incomes, children's education,
medical, business and financial emergencies.
This is Living Insurance in action and naturally
Equitable is proud of its role in bringing more financial
security to more and more Americans.
We are proud, too, of the annual statement shown
below, which indicates the kind of confidence you can
have in the Man from Equitable when he tells you how
Lii'iiig Insurance fits your life and needs.
