Then came the Korean "police action," and once again Uncle Sam tapped Volzke on the shoulder and away he went to the far Pacific to help preserve the de mocracy. Two years more away from racing on the front lines of battle and when he returned he had a new battle this time to get down to 112 pounds. But he turned the trick and started drawing some good assignments. THE RIG MONEY In 1954 he won the $160,000 Santa Anita Maturity aboard a long-shot named Apple Valley that paid off at something like 10-1 on a $2 bet. He also was up on a $15,000 stakes winner that year and he was the leading rider at Longacres In Seattle, Wash., last year. But during his 13 years of riding (with five years out to fight In two wars), Volzke holds one of the most-sought after records in racing: In all that time he never has been "set down" by the stewards for illegal tactic?.; never a breath of scandal has touched his namef never have officials questioned his motives, nor the fans the honesty of his Judgment. Men of less stern makings'mlght think that the hand of fate Is bcinir unkind to send htm to the sidelines again. But not Volzke.
