Youthful Actor Grabs First Juvenile Oscar Nomination . By ALIVE MOSBY I'nited Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) A dark haired, big-eyed boy named Sal Mmeo has one big hope: To break the Oscar Jinx against Juveniles winning an award. Sal is only 17. He got the biggest surprise of his life and so did Hcllvwood when he passed up old er actors and snared a supporting actor Oscar nomination lor playing Jimmy Dean's pal in "Rebel With out a Cause." "The Bronx is in an uproar!" grinned the youthful New York ac tor today. "Sure, I hope to win. I dnn't know why young people aren't often nominated e x c e p t they don't often get lop roles."- Sal has a long tradition to break. Mickey Rooney was nominated for an Oecar In 1939. Jackie Cooper in 19:il, Bonlta Granville in 183ti. Ann Blyth in 1D45 and Brandon de Wilde in 1953. Not one of these Juveniles won the Oscar. If Sal wins, he'll be the youngest victor in Oscar history. To make up for the Jinx, the academy's board of governors down the years has voted special awards to young thespinns. "But I'd rather be nominated among the older actors and lose than get special award as a minor, ' Mineo said. Sal was a dark horse in the Oscar race. He wasn't even invited as a possible nominee to the tele cast where the nominations were announced. He heard about the honor at the home of Universal International Studio's school teach er where he lives when working in Hollywood. "We were eating dinner and we tuned in on the nominations," he said. "When they called my name I hollered 'Oh, no!' I was so ex cited I dropped my dinner on the floor." Sal still has a welfare worker chaperoning him on the set. He's in his last year of high school at the MOM school. Next year he hopes to enter Columbia Uni versity. "Who shall T take to the Oscar award ceremony? Anita Ekberg?" he speculated. The board also announced that bids for bleachers to be built at the municipal swimming pool have been advertised and will be opened at the regular city council meet ing March 13. A committee was named by the board to set up scheduling rules and policies for the use of Cems Stadium by Oregon Technical In stitute. Klamath Union Hish School and Sacred Heart Academy fcr this spring's baseball season. Mem bers of this committee are John Van Ooren, Martin Brauner, Glen Bowen and Bob Bonney. A parks and recreation advisory council with 29 members repre senting all the activities of the city's recreation program was named by the board. A list of the members will be published when the formal invitations have been sent out and acceptance or rejec tion received from those named to the council. A letter of petition from 167 resi dents of Klamath Palls protesting the lack of indoor recreation fa cilities in the city was read to the board. The petitioners asked the board to study the possibilities of ob taining more Indoor recreation fa cilities for both teen-agers and adults. The board Indicated that a study of the problem will be made. T. J. O'Harra and Ernest Bish op tendered their resignations from the local girls Softball commis sion. Mrs. Robert Abbey, member of the board. Warren Rock and Warren Bunyan were named to the commission by the board. Hold over members of the commission are Floyd Wynne and Clayton Harmon. Bert Smith, who has been sec retary of the commission, resigned his post but he will remain as an ex-oflicio member of the commis sion due to his status as a mem ber, of the State Girl's Softball Commission. Recreation Director Bonney re ported that tWl.17 has been spent this season for sledding guards on the city's streets. The normal ex penditure for guards runs from $270 to $250. Bonney said. The board authorized Bonney and Bert Smith to attend the Ore gon State Softball Association meet ing in Portland March 25. The city representatives will bid for the slate girl's softball tournament at this meeting. Bonney was also authorized to attend the meeting of the gover nor's committee on the National sporti festival. The meeting will be held In Salem on March 13. The Moore Park ice skating rink was open for 13 days in 1956, Bon ney reported, with a total of 11.8U0 skaters using the rink.
