I The me oi Aumerine Lucy, Negro I suiitnl who wants to continue her studies it the ill-white Uni versity of Alabama, was In a state bordering on total confusion to day. Miss Lucy. 36. was "perman ently expelled" by the Board of Trustees of the 125-year-old uni versity at Tuscaloosa at a secret meeting Wednesday night. The trustees' action came within hours of an order from Federal Jur?e H. Hobart Grooms order ing her rcadmission to the uni versity. She had been suspended Feb. 6 after riots on the campus over ber presence. Her attorney Arthur D. Shores said he bad no idea what legal course he would pursue in an ad ditional effort to have the 26-year-old former schoolteacher read mitted. Miss Lucy herself was in New York for medical attention and "rest, peace and quiet." LEFT BIRMINGHAM She left Birmingham yesterday with Thurgood Marshall, chief counsel for the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored Peo ple. The NAACP has been backing her efforts over the past 29 months to be admitted to the university. Dtinsmuir BPW Initiates Five . i DUNSMUIR Helena Schleuter of Yreka, northern district president of the Business and Professional Women's Club, officiated at the in itiation of five new members into the Dunsmulr club at a dinner meeting at the Hotel Dunsmulr on Monday evening. New initiates are Jodie Hewlitt, Elisabeth Knopes, Signa Oilson, Winifred Sherman and Flora Wood. A- film entitled "Let's Face It" concerning (he recent nuclear tests m Nevada was shown by Marjorie Young, civil defense chairman. Karen Lee entertained with ac cordion numbers. She and her mother, Mrs. Adelaide Lee, were dinner guests. Discussion of the St. Patrick's card party on March 16 at the Travelers Hotel was included in the business session. Eleanor Harrison is the party chairman. The next meeting of the club will be on the evening of March 13 at the home of Qolda Huddle. In expelltn. Miss Lucy from the university, the trustees accused her of making "false, defamatory, Impertinent and scandalous charges' against university offi cials. The expulsion resolution aaid. "No educational institution can maintain necessary disciplinary action if any student, regardless of race, guilty of the conduct of Autherine J. Lucy be permitted to remain." The Negro woman was enrolled at the university Feb. 1 In com pliance with a Federal District Court order issued by Grooms In the wake of the riots, the Board of Trustees ordered her sus pension for "her safety" and the "satety of oUsers." In Ihe :m tempt mo tion miss Lucy chanted these offi cials, had conspired with members oi the mob to keep her from at tending eiasses. The petition called the mob action a "cunning stratagem." In his findings, Grooms exoner ated the trustees and officials of the contempt charges on the grounds they acted In good faith in excluding her from tha campus alter tne riots. Meanwhile, the Alabama House of Representatives in Montgomery whooped through a resolution to establish a committee to deter mine if the NAACP is controlled by Communists. Under the terms of the resolu tion, which now goes to the Sen' ate. Miss Lucy would be called as a witness. The Senate approved a resolu tion by unanimous voice vote ask ing for federal funds to settle Ne groes outside the South. Bob Dtwty Elected Men's Club President DUNSMUIR Bob Dewey baa been elected the first president of the Methodist Men's Club. Karl Nelson is vice president and Glen Minuth, secretary treasurer. These officers were elected to serve until June at a club meeting Monday night at the church. The building program was dis cussed at the meeting and Interim methods or improving toe cnurcn facilities. The men also discussed participation in Railroad Days. Annual Speech i Festival Set The annual Klamath County senior high school speech festival will be held In the Chiloquin High School, Tuesday, March 6. Students will participate in eight divisions, numerous, extemporan eous, after dinner speeches, spe cial speeches, radio, serious inter pretation, poetry and panel. Subject of radio speeches, "Phases -of Conservation of Wild life." The panel discussion will be on the topic, "School Activities, What Are the Values and What Are the Problems." Extemporan eous soeeches will be on "The Problems of Southeast Asia." Assembly Lists Church Services . The troop meets Thursday evenings at tne Methodist Church, its sponsoring body.
