MARCH 1, 1956 USAF Regulation Out lines Ways Of Naming Air Bases By MAX WAl'CHOPE What will be the official name of the Klamath Fills Municipal Airport when the U.S. Air Force units are stationed here and be come fully operational? Tnls question has been asked by numerous residents locally since 195 when Congress authorized the establishment ol USAF Jet all' weather fighter-interceptor unit here. As explained In the February 35 Issue of the Air Force Timea, un official spokesman for the Air Force, there's more to pickini a name for an air base than Just palming a sign at the front gate of the Installation. JOINT OPERATION It has been explained by Air Force officers acquainted wilh the USAF regulations that an air base which la a Joint operation such as the Klamath Falls base will be Is not named as an Air Force base. In olhtf words, it retains its civil ian name such as "Klamath Falls Municipal Airport" or "Portland Municipal Airport." These are both airports used jointly by the House To Get Road Tax Bill Washington on a bin to raise gasoline, tire and other high way excise taxes will go before tile Hou with an added starter a special registration fee for heavy trucks. The House Ways and Means Committee, which voted for the truck tax Wednesday, estimated It will add too million dollars to the proposed new taxes, raising me total during tne next 16 years to neany it billion dollars. The money, along with the yield from present highway taxes, Is to be used for a long-range road building program with emphasis on a 40,000-mile network of stra teste Interstate highways. Present and projected taxes will make an estimated 138.700,000,000 available as the federal share of the 61 billion dollar program. Rep. Ileed IY, senior Repub lican on the committee, proposed Hit truck tax. A bill without it, he said, would be "completely un fair" to ordinary motorists. It would impose a yearly regis tration fas of ll.to per 1,000 pounds for all trucks weighing over 20,000 pounds, based on either the weight of the unloaded truck or on ita licensed carrying ca pacity, whichever is greater. The weight limit was fixed to make it apply to heavy commercial trucks, of which there are about 100,000. Other provisions of the bill would apply uniformly to all vehicles re gardless of size or weight. They would raise the gasoline and diesel fuel tax from a to 3 cents a gallon; the tire tax from S to 8 cents a pound; and the tax on trucks, buses and trailers from I to 10 per cent of value: .nH wouia put a new tax of S cent a pouna on camelback, or retread' Ing rubber. It Is within the realm of possibility that someday the Klamath Falls Base will have grown to the point where the USAF assumes total control In this case the base would probably be named in accordance with the then cur rent USAF regulations. If this ever becomes a reality, then quite possibly the local base could be namrd after some local deceased Air Force member who had distinguished himself in war time or had made some other out standing contribution to the Air Force. Only these deceased heroes are to be picked as base namesakes, according to a new Air Force regu lation No. 000-9 and then only with tne approval of the Air Force and ylth suitable ceremonies. Richard Nixon Reported Election Year Storm Center WASHINGTON (UP Vice President Richard M. Nixon la to day's election-year storm center, If he is forced off the 195 Re publican presidential ticket, a like ly aubstitute would ba former Gov. 1 Thomas E. Dewey, of New York. Dewey probably would accept. Some of Nixon's friends fear that the movement to bounce blm got a green light Wednesday in Presi dent Elsenhower's announcement that he would accept renomination but leave the selection of a vice- president up to the Republican Na tional convention. Some of Nixon's adverse critics read it the other way as a solid endorsement of the vice president. The facts are that Mr. Eisen hower emphatically praised Nix on's ability and his performance as vice president but refused to commit himself when asked if he wanted him on the ticket again. Time for that, said the President, Is after the Republican National Convention has nominated a presi dential candiaate. Mr. Eisenhower's refusal to com mit himself on a running mate la sufficient to put new muscle and enthusiasm in the organized effort to ditch Nixon. Some of the Presi dent's longtime military associates and more recent golf cronies are active in the movement against the vice president. They will get some Immediate encouragement, at least, from Mr. Eisenhower's repudiation Wednes day of Nixon's recent reference to Chief Justice Earl Warren as a Republican chief Justice. Nixon so described Mr. Warren in remark ing on the Supreme Court'a racial Integration ruling. Nixon is primarily on the spot, however, because of public opinion : of Mr. Eisenhower's Septem ber heart attack. The fact of that seizure inescapably leads to un-; usual speculation whether the I President would survive to com plete a second term. Moreover, the President la 5 yesrs old snd would be 70 on leaving office after a second term. When a name is approved the congressman from the area and the next of kin are to be notified. The regulation says USAF head quarters will make the announce ment so it can be coordinated with the lawmakers. The pay hikes came through a boost in the federal minimum wage from 7S cents te II an hour. It was voted by Congress last year to become effective today. An estimated 24 million work ers are covered by terms of the Fair Labor Standnrris Act gen erally those engaged or whose work Is connected with Interstate commerce but only about 2 loo 000 have been making less than the new 11 minimum.
