The Mustangs now meet St. Mary's of Medford for the district title. aim Cagers Defend County Prep Crown By CLAYTON HANNON Mnlin still rules the Klamath County B League basketball scene, but there were a few doubts as to how long the Mustangs would stand as king in last Saturday night's cnampionship gair.e that closed the 1956 County Tournament. Tne imai score of the title con test favored Malin, 68-54. over the Chiloquin Panthers, but the game ending tally doesn't tell the story of a gallant Chiloquin victory try, nor the sterling homestretch drive staged by Malin to cap the three day cage tournament at Pelican Co'jr;. A capacity crowd of Basin bas ketball fans was treated to some spine-tingling excitement before Ue Lower Basin hoopsters were able to turn on the gas and roar away to a 14-point triumph. Dur iug the first three quarters of play, Chiloquin battled Malin to the wire and then some, as the game was tied 10 times add the lead changed hands on 23 other occa sions. During the first half alone, the clubs exchanged the lead 15 times in a see-saw battle that last ed three quarters, then the roof fell in on the Panthers. With the score knotted at 44-44 to begin the fourth period's ac tion, Malin exploded for what was to be a 24 point quarter, while Chiloquin was eventually going to ' SIEMENS HIGH . Chiloquin's Dick Siemens col lected the individual scoring honors in the county tournament with a total of 56 points in three games. Grady Saunders, Ma lin reserve, handed the Mustangs their deciding lead as he hit from outside in the opening seconds of play and Malin was never headed from this time on. Ray Johnson sank another two point goal for Malin with a Jumper and then added a second shot irom the field. Saunders pumped in one of two free tosses. Norm Oliva added a bucket from the 'field and Saunders again tallied with a basket to push Malin into the front running position with a 65-44 lead in the first four minutes of play. Dick Siemens collected the first Chiloquin points of the quarter on a pair of free shots with only 3:45 remaining to play. The first quarter closed with Chiloquin holding Malin to a 17-17 standstill, thanks to some fine out side shooting by Gary Heglund. Then the Panthers took the lead as the first half's time ran out on field goal by Sid Ridenour wilh only a few seconds left in the second pane) to give Chiloquin a 34-33 lead. Oliva led Malin's third period drive as they again worked their way into a 44-44 tie at the end of three chapters. From then on, all Chiloquin could see of the Malin attack was the dust and smoke that rose from the Pelican Court nets as the result of the Mustangs' torrid finish. Steyskal led the Malin attack with 18 points, while Johnson and Oliva followed with 15 and 14. For the Panthers, Dick Siemens was high with 14, and Heglund added m, all coming on long shots from outside. . In. the Saturday night consola uon game. Bonanza surprised Mer- rill with a 58-51 triumph for third Place nonors. Ron Roberts and Dick Burnett spiked the Antler tri umph with 19-noint scoring efforts. Terry Sherrill and Herb Schlecht tallied 16 and 12 for the losers. After the final game Saturday, the County League all-star selec tions were announced, and five teams were represented on the "dream team." Malin had four members honored. Ray Johnson. Norm Oliva. Glen Steyskal and Roger Dokken. chiloquin's Dick Siemens and Gary Heglund were selected as was Gilchrist's Tom my Larson. Sacred Heart's Dean Michaelis and-Bonanza's Dick Bur nett and Ron Roberts rounded out the H)-man team.
