Shows Up

California uranium prospector
missing aince Tuesday hiked 60
' miles into a remota southern Utah
Civil Aeronautics Administration
station last night and reported
both he and the helicopter he had
been flying wera all right.
Ben Williams, a 38-year-old fa
ther of live from Sacramento.
Calif., walked into HanlMville.,The
community is so remote Its only
direct link with the outside world

another CAA station at Bryce
vanyon, vu miles away.
Williams disappeared on a flight
from Kanab, on the Arizona bor
der, to Escalante. civil Air Patrol

Williams said he made an emer
gency landing when he ran out of
fuel, but the craft was undamaged
and probably could be flown safely

CHICAGO (UP) Scientists
rushed today to measure the ef
fects of a huge fiery blast on the
sun and the greatest cosmic ray
bombardment of the earth in
recorded history.
Balloons carrying research ap
paratus climbed 23 miles into the
stratosphere to record the mys
terious cosmic artillery. Scientific
reports were also awaited from
areas as remote as Admiral Rich
ard Byrd's expedition near the
South Pole.
Physicists at the University of
Chicago, who first announced the
solar bombardment, aaid there
was no danger to human beings.
However, Interference with tel
evision and radio reception and
deadening of the trans-Atlantic
telephone is possible, they said
It Is even conceivable that TV sets
in the Midwest could suddenly
pick, up programs originating in
Europe.
The cosmic ray bombardment
started Wednesday, 30 minutes
after a mammoth blast of fiery
gases on the sun, possibly equal
to the force of a million hydrogen
bombs.
The giant flare on the sun was
the fifth of Its kind on record
and the cosmic bombardment was
the greatest since scientists began
studying the mysterious rays.
Scientists at Chicago said cos
mic rays were hitting the earth
and zipping through everything at
the rate of 3000 a minute 15 times
the usual rate. An even greater
Intensity was recorded at Climax.
Colo.
The bombardment continued
early today, but at a diminishing
rate, scientists said.

"It will take a team of this size
and caliber to do Justice to the
1956 political story."
Permanent members of the
Campaign Cavalcade include an
assignment chief, a reporter, two
film cameramen, a lighting tech
nician, a film sound engineer, a
radio engineer to record on-the-scene
oratory and interviews, a
business manager and two general
assistants. On a rotating basis two
CBS news correspondents will ac
company the unit at all times.
Using specially equipped station
wagons and switching to airplane
when timing requires it, the unit
will supply both CBS television
and radio programs with both spot
and background news coverage.
After the New Hampshire pri
maries the task force will fly to
Minnesota for the primaries there.
Wisconsin will follow. Later the
unit plans a turn through the
South, sampling the political at
mosphere In Tennessee, Virginia
and the Carolines.
"When our unit covers a candi
date," soys Day, "It will not only
find out what he said, but why
he said it, whether he meant it.

plane today reported sighting a
tug missing. since Sunday with six
men aboard.
The 60-foot Shell Co. Tug No. 40
was battling heavy seas in the
storm lashed Pacific but apparent
ly Is in no danger, the search
plane reported.
The tug left Suva Sunday to
salvage a yr.cht stranded on a reef
some 200 miles away, usually a
two-day voyage; However, it failed
to reach its destination and a sea
and air search was begun.
, Early today, the search plane
spotted the tug some 260 miles
northeast of Its- original destina
tion. The pilot reported the plane
cnecxea the tug's compass by
radio and provided her the course
to steer.
