Brader The February meeting of the Gilchrist Community Garden Club was held in the library of the high chi .t r.iiehrlst February 15 with Mrs. Corwin Galbrealh, presi dent, presiding. She stressed thai the conservation program in ruamain County was a six year plan cov ering the following subjects in the past: birds, soil, waler. forest. minerals and wimiue. rauy vuic and Ada Sampson were introduced from the fifth grade to talk on conservation posters. Many the , posters used wall paper very clev-; erly as a medium of expression. Wanda Hlght won first prize. I Shirley Edgar from the sixth grade won second place in the irarden club essay contest, and ; Mary Helen Edgar of Gilchrist third nlace. Honorable mention went to Chet Emery LaPine, and Shirley Edgar, Gilchrist. Returns from the essay contest in the school competition in the county' had not been returned. Douglas Drake and Shirley Ed gar gave a demonstration ol pic-! ture making with aluminum foil and showed the pictures using tne wildlife theme that were on display. Lee Ann Curtis of the seventh and eighth grade explained the work done in the English classes on the essays. Mary Helen Edgar explained the work done in the wild life theme making the place mats and nap kins on unbleached muslin with the use of ball point paints. These mats were Christmas gifts for the par enls and were loaned tor the dis j play. I Mervin Jordan explained the work done by the science class in the conservation theme and Don Crotwell told about the education week displays aud certificates. Kay Rolison read the news ar ticle prepared for publication on "What Gilchrist High School Has Done This Year." The article was prepared jointly by Kay and Sue Craig, zsennie James presentea a clever radio script on "Game Management." At the close of the program Mrs. Verne I. Brader, state garden club conservation chairman, gave a short summary of the work be ing done by the garden clubs of America in conservation, with spe cial emphasis on the work being done to preserve wilderness areas for recreation and preservation, of wildlife and plant life. Refreshments were served by the hostesses Mrs. Kenneth Mc- Kenzle. Mrs. A. R. Pinney. and Mrs. G. Oxbarrow all of Crescent. Their part of the room was beau tifully decorated in the Valentine motif with a red heart and cupid love tree for centerpiece. Dorothy Houston, captain of Rroup 1 on tree study, had a table full of information on Douglas fir. Her croup will udy hemlock next month. Captain of group 2, Mrs. Vera Rochek. had a table full of study material on ponderosa pine. BE SURE TO ATTEND!
