That coalition has the votes to stop La use he cold, although he will own Ohio s 6-voie delegation as a fa vorite son. Lausche is shooting this year for the Senate seat of Republican George H. Bender, who succeeded Taft, To the north. Democratic Got. G. Mennen Williams of Michigan reigns a one of the real political surprises of current politics. Wil liams was once retarded aj more an amateur than a political oper ator. He u 44 years old. a foitsy. natty man who has made a green and while polka dot ue his political trademark. Is and out of the Roosevelt and Truman a a ministrations from time to time.. Williams served a hitch as Michigan s attorney general Ke was elected governor in 1MB and he's still there vita none m sight to dinplace him. His position in the Democratic party is secure, Williams is in close partnership with organized labor, notably the CIO wing led by Walter Reutfaer which is dominant in Michigan's automotive industry. Williams would be strong wherever Lausche would be weak, but probably not strong enough anywhere this year. Tne list of dark horses would reach from here to way out yonder. Count in two very old men. Sen. Alben W. Barkley. 78. of Kentucky, and speaker Sam Ray burn, 74, Texas. Neither is a likely nominee. But if the 19&6 Democratic con vention were deadlocked as it was 33 years ago in Madison Square Garden, New York, the party wou be forced to a holding operation a caretaker ticket. Barkley and Rayburn would be safe and gener ally acceptable. So would a good many others. MANY POSSIBILITIES Every native born Democratic governor and United States sena tor plus numerous members of the House ol Representatives has at some ume dreamed of being President. Some dream it night after night. The dark borses are too numerous to list. But tbey will be on hand in Chicago, ready, will ing and, possibly, able. Of the senators, smart Syming ton of Missouri is most often men tioned in Washington debates, i Symington, at M. is serving his : first Senate term to which he was I elected in 1952. He was first sec retary of the separate Air Force. Although not bom in a log cabin, Symington can and does claim in bis sell-edited biography that he eot his first Job at the aee of 13 1 office boy and earned s2 a week. : He used to be a newspaperman himself, a reporter on the Balti more Sun. The record estab lishes Symington as a successful businessman and government ad ministrator. He held high office under both Presidents Roosevelt and Truman. Mike broke in on the Okla taoman to succeed your correspond ent on a sports desk back there :n 1P30 or there He is 53 years old.
