Irvin. Jl-year-old Evansville pipe Insulator sought throughout the na tion, was picked up when he tried to unload two diamond rings he admittedly took from a home at Redondo Beach, near Los Angeles. "I wasn't too surprised." he said In an interview. "I've been expect ing to get picked up for quite a while." His arrest was coincidental In spectors John O'Keefe and Leo Ferraggiaro dropped In to the Market at Third street pawnshop routinely. Said O'Keefe: "He acted suspiciously, as If he didn't belong to the diamond." Irvin. who was unarmed, pro duced Identification of Victor Da vis of Los Angeles, pianist with Tex Williams' Western orchestra. He spent one night. Jan. 28. at Davis' apartment after thumbing a ride with the pianist. Irvin had hitchhiked from Princeton, Ind., where he escaped Jan. 18 from the Gibson County Jail. Irvin was convicted Dec. 20 of fatally shooting W. Wesley Kerr, Evansville filling station attendant. He was charged also with slaying five others: Mrs. Mary Holland; Mrs. Wilhelmina Sailer, in her country home near Solitude, Ind. and three members of the Ooebel Duncan farm family, near Hender son, Ky. He was awaiting transfer to Michigan City, Ind., for execution June 12. Arrested here, Irvin was taken to the Hall of Justice and booked simply "en route to Los Angeles," a holding charge. "After we told him we had talked to Victor Davis, he said, 'You want to know who I renlly am?' Then he said he was Leslie Irvin and wanted in Indiana for killing six people," O'Keefe said. "I wouldn't hurt anybody." Irvin said. "All the way out here I got along fine with people and they were very nice. I was recognized twice that I'm sure of. once by a motorist outside Springfield, Mo. and by a truck driver at Cozad that's In Nebraska, But I knew he was calling police so I left, in a hurry." Pickup Truck Hits Parked Auto One man was Iniurrd as the re sult of a pickup truck hitting a parked vehicle in the 1600 block on Oregon Avenue. Klemath FrIIj police reported today. The injured man was dayman Ijtrson, 1616 Oregon Avenue, who waa sitting in the parked vehicle. He was X-rayed this morning in an effort to detect possible internal injuries, police reported. The driver of the pickup. Claude Butler of Chiloquln. pleaded guilty I In police court this murnlnc on charges of drunk driving and driv-l ing without an operators license. Judge Frank Blacknier deferred ! judgment and set the ball on each count nt $100. The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. yesterday, police said. OREGON U.S., Britain Begin Work On War Curb WASHINGTON i The United States, Britain and Frtnce were aaid today to be working against a March 1 deadline to develop deterrents to renewed fighting in Palestine. The focal point of Western con cern, officials said, is an area in a demilitarized zone between Syr ia and Israel on the Jordan River. The spot, on the Israel side of the river, is called Jisr Bnat Yacov. An Israeli canal at that point is separated from the Jordan Riv er waters by few hundred feet of unexcavated earth. Israeli officials have maintained they have a right to enter the de militarized zone, finish the exca vation and tap the Jordan waters for use in the canal. Syria has , told the United States It fears a military incident if the Israelis try to do so. Officials here speak or March 1 as a kind of deadline because after that time, they say. the weather would be favorable for whatever operations Israel might undertake. The full resources of American and British diplomacy are being used to try to dissusde Israel from any move which would set oil a clash vith Syria. Such a clash might bring Egypt in on the side of Syria. President Elsenhower and Brit ish Prime Minister Eden last week directed a new study of steps which might be taken to prevent an outbreak of open warfare in , Palestine.
