Shermalee Henry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Henry, Klamath Falls, is a member of the school faculty. When she learned that additional funds were needed for school use above the amount that can be allocated to the school, she sought help. This check from the Lioness Club is an extra contribution to ehari table work. The club's main project is to give help to the blind and providing glasses for under privileged children of this community as well as providing tele-binocular tests for high school students. The telo-binocular tests are to be provided for all elomentary students in the city and county next year according to plans of the club membership. I think Paul Pat terson was one of the most like able, most Intelligent and most cnpaoie persons I have ever known. It Is an Indescribable loss to us all to have him taken at the very top of his effectiveness and value In his service to our state. The school construction bill, which last week I said would be on the floor of the House In a few days, is temporarily bogged down in the Rules Committee. It 1 not being held up by that com mittee. Most everyone concedes that the bill will be granted an open rule and sent to the floor. But when, that Is the question. The Rules Committee has already held several days of hearings on the bill. It seems that both the witnesses and the committee mem bers who question them want to do a lot of talking so thus far only four of the 11 House members who Rsked to appear before the com mittee have been heard. How long it will take to hear the remaining seven is hard to say. As a random guess I would sav the bill will not reach the floo? for about two weeks. The bearings ("smearlngs" would be a more accurate wnrdi conducted by a Senate-House Joint subcommittee looking Into the pat enting of some mining claims at tne old Buzzard mine in Jackson Couniy (known now as Al Sarena mine i are about finished. "Mr. President, under the old mining law which was rhanged by the lust session of this Con gress, there was nothing the Bu reau of Land Management could do but Issue the patents. The un usual in this case has been the disclosure that under the former secrrtary of interior not only was the law Ignored, but no decision. either pro or con. was reached on patent applications. CBS-TV is launching an unusual "spectacular" a 90-minule color version of the best-selling boolc, "The Day Lincoln Was Shot." Lillian Cish plays Mary Todd. Comedian Jack Lemmon, in the most off-beat casting of the year, portrays John Wilkes Booth. Massey, of course, is portraying Lincoln again, a role that has haunted him for 16 years. But Massey not only doesn't mind, he's happy about it. "I like Lincoln, and please say that." Massey told me before re hearsals for the show. "Recently I was misquoted as saying my new TV spy series would get me away from Lincon. I never said that.' The deep-voiced actor starred in "Abe Lincoln in. Illinois" in New York for two years and also toured with the play. His film version was released in 1939. "Down the years I've received letters about Lincoln," he mused. "It's funny, ihe identification you get. Nobody has played Lincoln as much as I have. Four years ago I did him on 'The Pulitzer Prise Theater' on TV. And I've done a radio version of the play, oh, four or five times, on L i n c o 1 n's Birthday." Massey wore a beard attached with a rubber band only for the last scene of the play. But the TV story is about an older Lincoln, to be will be bearded. "And I'll play him differently," Massey added. "As he's had four years of a tremendous burden." i seT? He's a tv &mww!" Mill Study Findings Agree With Earlier Study Made LAKE VIEW Findings, of the! dried, surfaced and again grd mill study on ponderosa pine grade i ed. The lumber grades shown In recovery made in January, 1955, at the American Forest Products Corporation at Lakevlew reveal to industry and the forest service that the basic lumber recovery the log grades is in agreement with the data found In previous mill studies and in current use by the forest service and industry, Lloyd Oillmor, timber management staff officer on the Fremont Na tional Forest, stated this week This study was made as a co operative project with the Amer ican Forest Products Corp., White Pine Lumber Company. Fremont Sawmill Co., Western Pine Assoc iation, Oregon Forest Products Laboratory and the U.S. Forest Service participating. The study was to determine the grades of lumber that can be expected from ponderosa pine timber grown In Uie Lakevlew area. All logs cut for a full week last January at the American Forest Products Corp. mill at Lakeview were scaled and graded and all lumber produced was graded and tallied on the green chain by lndl the report are based on dry sur faced material. The log rule used was developed by Dr. J. E. Lode wick in 1938 when he was a mem- from I ber of the Pacific Northwest For est and Range experiment station and this log rule is in general use in Oregon and Washington for appraising ponderosa pine timber. A detailed report, "Ponderosa Pine Lumber Recovery In the Lakevlew, Oregon area," by E. E. Matson is printed in Research Note lor December, 1955 published by the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
