Farm Forestry Advice Given Well-managed sheep grazing: and farm forestry may be a profitable combination on culover or margin al forest lands, preliminary trials by Oregon State College show. Douglas fir seedlings planted In cleared or thinned oak stands suf fered "little or no damage from sheep browsing except when na tive grasses were over-grazed, ac cording to D. W. Hedrick and Fred Hall, range management research ers. Long-range plans are to see if sheep can be grazed profitably on such sties for supplemental income while farm forests are getting started. Indications are that such lands will produce up to 40 pounds of meat per acre. Hedrick says fir-planted lands should provide grazing for 10 to Id years with declining value as trees become too. large to permit good grass growth. The tests are being conducted near Corvallis on lands covered with white oak and some Douglas fir that is typical of- about ouei million acres of Willamette Vatley foothills. Trials are in cooperation with the OSC school of forestry. While the seedlings suffered little or no damage from sheep brows ing. Hedrick emphasized the im portance of holding animals otf until grass growth was well ad vanced and then removing them while there isstlll forage left. Where browsing damage did oc cur tn the trials it was caused by deer and mostly in early spring before grass had made good growth. Later in the season, deer caused no more seedling damage on sheep-grazed lands than on un graded plots. Test plots that were cleared of oak and planted with firs were equal in grazing value to land that was clear of all trees and seeded with a grass mixture. Each produced 40 pounds of meat per acre during one grazing season. Hedrick points out. however, that grazing value undoubtedly would decrease within a few years un less brush was held out with chem ical sprays. Plots where undesirable oak was thinned out and Douglas fir seed lings were underplanted produced about 20 pounds of meat per acre. rmra a"a"o"ooinrnro?nr3TmrQ NOTICE It there anyone im Klamath Falls named Goldie Kidder who g married Bill O'Malley of Troy, Montana? IMPORTANT Cleaning Machines Present Storage Problem In Homes Storage for large cleaning Items such as vacuum sweeper, waxer and polisher Is often a problem in small or very compact homes. Usua lly, the broom closet will hold nothing but the slimmest brooms and mops, and bulky units must be stored in some out of the way place or In the basement where they have to be lugged up stairs every time you need them. One clever architect has solved this major storage problem by de signing a large closet for all clean ing gear right outside the kitchen door. It Is about as easy to add this closet as to build a small en closed porch. And while you are at it, it may be extended so that one half of the space becomes a snug, dry spat for garden equipment and patio urniture. The closet becomes part of the house by siding it in the same pattern as the rest of the home's exterior. Western red cedar boards and batten or drop siding Is espe cially good looking for the exterior and may be finished in a rich red brown stain, or painted. Rough sawn cedar adds a textural depth that blends beautifully with land scaping. This wood Is so workable and adaptable that your small addi tion will not look like an after thought, but will easily become. an integrated part of the home's design. The broom closet should be right next to the kitchen door, with a roof overhang to protect you from the weather. Double doors, also of cedar may open right out and close snugly with magnetic locks, You will probably want to use hangers or nails on the back wall to hang wax applicators, dust mops and scrub mops. For an added extra, Install a floor of cement or Douglas fir 2x4" decking the- same size as tne over naug above. On warm days Mrs. Housewife can lounge for a few minutes right outside the kitchen door on her own prt vate patio, meanwhile keeping an eye on tne roast Shelves, racks or drawers Inside the broom closet will hold cleaning cloths, brushes and buckets. If the closet is warm enough, glass cleaner, soaps, detergents and all kinds of cleaning liquids may also be kept here. The garden storage closet may be installed right alongside the other unit, or back to back. In dividual needs will determine size and depth of this closet. If you have power mower and lawn sweeper, for example, you will need much more space then for an ordinary hand mower and some rakes and spades, The more avid gardener might want to add a small potting table along one wall. Beaufyguard Plywood Used The new char-nroof and slain- proof hardwood plywood, termed "beautyguard" by the trade, is ex pected to be widely used for heavy duty purposes such as bar tops, counters, and tops for dressers, tables and desks. It will also be available to the home craftsman for these same uses through retail lumber yards and plywood shops. The material Is unaffected by al coholic beverages and by household liquids of acid or caustic nature. A burning cigarette held directly against the hardwood plywood will not char the beautiful surface. The material is made by laminatinor a nun layer oi aluminum ion oeneaih the face veneer ot the plywood, and by finishing. It with approved materials. The aluminum rapidly conducts heat, preventing charring of the wood surface. The new development offers the beauty of genuine hardwood at less cost than the Imitation wood sur faces now being used for chur-re-sistant qualities. Furniture items made of "beautyguard"' hardwood plywood are being exhibited at the winter furniture shows. Remodeling of the laboratory areas now In progress will permit the accommodation of larger class es through the utilization of all available space and the centralized location of the parts and equip ment room. Alterations are ex pected to be completed In the very near future. A new three-year program. Is expected to begin with the opening of classes September, 1936. Many phases of electronics which cannot be covered in the two-year curricu lum will be adequately treated in the third year, according to Orrell.
