THIS PACKARD FOUR-HUNDRED MODEL offers elegant and stately styling and an Improved
torsion bar suspension system, the ride and comfort advance pioneered on American cars by
Packard in 1955 models. For 1956, new Paclcards offer two major engineering advances that
will be "auto-industry firsts" an electrically-activated push-button automatic transmission,
and a non-slip differential, representing the first basic change in differential design in more
than 30 years. The non-slip differential eliminates driving nuisances such as getting stuck in
snow, on ice, in mud, and other adverse driving situations. Most important, it contributes to
the ultimate to date in safe, secure readability when a car goes around corners or sharp
curves. The non-slip differential senses which'reer wheel needs and can utilize tractive power,
and makes a transmission of power accordingly. It is sold by Juckeland Sales and Service.

New stainless steel treatment runs

a pattern for two-tone exterior col

Wide stainless steel strips extend
across the roofllne above the Clip
per rear backlight to emphasize
roof contours. A new rear deck
gives the rear a wider, crlsper ap
pearance and makes possible a
substantial Increase in luggage
New streamlined bumper guards
for the 1956 Clipper have been
placed directly below the head
lights. The low impact bar of the
new grille la wide and ot neavy
construction, and adds to a "roaa-
hugging" look reflected in the over
all styline of the automobile.
Repositioning of headlights for
1956, one-Inch lower than on pre
vious Clipper models, makes for
safer night driving. This relocation
was made possible by the level-
ride" lnherrent In torsion bar sus
pension, a riding comfort advance
now standard equipment on all
Clipper models.. The load-levelizer
mechanism of the system keeps
the Clipper riding level at all times
regardless o.f passenger or luggage
loads.
The 1956 Clipper grille shows dis
tinctive long, horizontal lines that
give an impression of width to the
front of the car. The famous Clip
per "helmsman" wheel, dominates
the center of the grille. The name
"Clipper" and a futuristic hood
ornament grace the hood of the
car.
Longer, more graceful "eye
brows" for headlights eliminate
stray lighting and make for more
efficient light distribution on the
road during night driving.
The Clipper tail-lamp assembly
for ' 1958 is suggestive of jet-age
motion. Dual exhaust outlets are

Rear ends of the 1956 Clipper
moaeis are simple and clean, The
rear bumper guards have been
treated to a functional styling ap
proach Which permits them to
house the rear license plate and
license plate lights.
The 1966 Clipper models will be
offered in more than 40 single and
iwo-ione color combinations.
Interior treatments are available
in 38 combinations, with a choice
of 17 fabric and leather materials.
Instrument panels have been stvled
for improved appearance and vis
ibility. A new, large-face, electric,
sweep-second hand clock Is stand
ard equipment on most models.

ton" motoring, the auto industry's
largest displacement and most pow

and sedan models, the newly-styled

The new Packards are powered
by 310-horsepower and 290-horse-
power V-8 engines, both with a 10
to 1 compression ratio, highest In
me auto industry. They also offer
an improved torsion bar suspension
system, the ride and comfort ad
vance credited with getting Pack
ard a greater share of sales in the
luxury car field in 1955 than In
any year since 1932.
Both of the new Packard V-8
engines develop 405 foot pounds of
torque at 2,800 rpm, the highest
torque rating ever engineered into
an America automobile engine. It
is torque that provides the burst
of power for normal driving ranges

The new Packards pioneer the
auto industry's first electrical-re
sponse, push - button Ultramatic
transmission, a device which over
comes the frailities of human tem
peraments and reflexes and does
the driver's thinking for him. It is
Impossible to select a wrong driv
ing range in street or highway oper
ation. Beyond that, the push-button
driving system makes for the ulti
mate In safety, comfort and con
venience.
The driver merely touches push
buttons which correspond to the
six driving range 'positions avail
able with Ultramatic. The buttons
are set in an attractive console
mounted on the steering column.
Design and appearance of the con
sole add up to an achievement
in functional art.
Simplicity Is the keynote of the
Packard push-button driving sys
tem. It is the shnpiist-to-operate,
easlest-to-understand transmission
yet devised: as simple as one-finger
piano playing. There Is no me
chanical linkage to overcome. Each
push-button electrically activates
Its own speclfio driving selection,
and upon being activated auto
matically locks out all others which
might damage the system if acti
vated Inadvertently.
Many safety advantages have
been achieved by tlelng in the push
button system with the ignition cir
cuit. For example, a driver who
activates the "park" push-button
wnne leaving his car parked on a
hill or inclined driveway need not
worry about a child inadvertantly
unlocking the power shaft. The se
lector is automatically locked In
Park," and oannot be disengaged
without opening the ignition cir
cuit with the ignition key.
At speeds over five miles-ner-
hour, only the push-buttons marked
Drive." "High," and "Low" can
be activated as driving conditions
may require. The others are auto
matically locked out to prohibit se
lection of the wrong position while
tne car is in motion.
The electrical push-button driving
system adds to the feeling of se
curity provided Dy the powerful
racitara v-8 engines. Packard en
gineers emphasize, as being more
important than their horsepower,
the fact that the Packard V-8 en
gines develop the highest torque In
tne auto industry making the 66th
series Packard the most alert and
agile performer on the road In all
driving ranges.
The new Packard V-8 engines of
fer the highest compression ratio
for any American-made car. High
compression is basic to economy
and high performance, especially
in deliverying useable power to nor
mal driving ranges as between 20
and 50 miles per hour.
New Packard V-8 engines are
compact, light arid durable. They
may oe expected to deliver
many as -100.000 miles of trouble-
free driving under normal opera
tion with normal maintenance at

generate ample torque for all driv
ing ranges without undue strain on

STUDEBAKER, with an outstanding record of station wagon popularity, has styled an all-new '
series of station wagohs for 1956. Entering the sfation wagon field just two years ago, Studcw
baker has seen its station wagon business rise to 1 1 per cent of its total sales, representing th
fastest rate of gain in the entire industry. The new 1956 President Pinehurst model is bigger
and more powerful, and has many unusual new features such as soundproof headlining to en-i '
hance the quiet atmosphere of the interior. The Pinehursfs big new 289-eubic inch V8 engine
develops 195 horsepower. Other station wagons in the line are "the Parkview in the Commander ,'
V8 series and the Pelham in the Campion six series. All three staXon wagons feature 'complete
passenger car refinements at the same time they are designed to serve as heavy-duty cargo
carriers. They can accommodate six passengers on the two full-width seats, and have maximum
capacity of 65 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded forward. A specially engineered , two
stage suspension system in the rear gives the station wagons the same soft ride as sedans, but '
supplies a firm support to the car body when it is loaded with heavy cargo. The new Stude
baker lines include 16 different basic models 12 in the President V8, Commander V8 and
Champion sedans and station wagons, and four in a new sports-type line.
